1 Network devices

Intermediary devices, like routers, switches, hubs, bridges, and firewalls, connect and direct data between end devices or other intermediary devices. Each network device has a unique identifier called a media access control (MAC) address used to locate and communicate with other devices on the same network segment.

2 Network topologies

Network topology is the logical or physical arrangement of network devices and media in a network, which affects how data flows and how devices communicate. 4 Network design

Network design is the process of planning and executing a network interconnection that meets the requirements and objectives of the network users and administrators. This requires taking into account various factors, such as performance, scalability, security, and cost. Performance depends on the characteristics and capabilities of the network devices and media, such as bandwidth, latency, throughput, jitter, etc. Scalability depends on the flexibility and modularity of the network topology and interconnection, such as hierarchical, modular, flat, etc. Security depends on the implementation and enforcement of network policies and mechanisms, such as encryption, authentication, authorization, firewall, etc. Lastly, cost depends on the availability and affordability of the network devices and media, as well as the operational and administrative costs.

5 Network troubleshooting

Network troubleshooting is the process of identifying and resolving problems and issues that affect the network interconnection and performance. To do this, you can use various tools and techniques, such as Ping, Traceroute, IPconfig/ifconfig, and Wireshark. Ping is a command-line tool that tests the connectivity and reachability of a network device or destination using ICMP echo request and reply messages. It can measure the round-trip time and packet loss rate of the data transmission. Traceroute is a command-line tool that traces the path and hops of a data packet from one network device or source to another network device or destination. It can show the IP addresses and names of the intermediary devices and the time taken by each hop. IPconfig/ifconfig are command-line tools that display and configure the IP settings and parameters of a network device or interface such as IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS server, etc. Wireshark is a graphical tool that captures and analyzes the data packets and frames that are transmitted and received by a network device or interface. It can show the details and contents of the packet headers and payloads, as well as filter and decode the data according to different protocols and formats.
