Start by assessing potential risks and hazards in the lab, such as chemical exposure, biological agents, or physical dangers. Conduct regular risk assessments to ensure the PPE and safety measures align with the current lab environment. This helps in implementing targeted safety measures and prevents unnecessary exposure.

PPE needs to be based on the hazards that can happen due to exposure; exposure routes need to be identified specific to lab environments.

Select appropriate PPE, such as gloves, goggles, lab coats, and respirators, based on the identified risks. Ensure the PPE meets safety standards (e.g., OSHA or ANSI) and is suited to specific tasks, like handling corrosive chemicals or working with infectious agents.

Complement PPE with lab safety equipment such as fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, and emergency showers. These tools work in tandem with PPE to minimize exposure risks and ensure overall safety in case of accidents or spills.

I’ve noticed in many labs that there is an overwhelming presence of complacency. Seasoned employees fail to acknowledge the importance of PPE and safety procedures. Often I hear “Well when I started working here, we didn’t have any of this stuff. I’ve been working with these hazards for nearly 20 years and I trust myself.” That’s all well and good but a majority of accidents happen when personnel are either complacent or under trained. It is not just enough to educate yourself and ensure your own safety. You must inform co-workers and inform them as well. A lab is very much a team environment regardless of the individual tasks each person does. Team safety can make all the difference.

One thing I have found important in the hazard evaluation process is to apply a hierarchy of controls: 1. Eliminate the hazard, if possible. If it cannot be eliminated, then 2. Isolate the hazard within the work area. If this cannot be done, then 3. Mitigate the hazard through engineering controls (e.g. fume hoods, physical barriers, etc). If this is not adequate or possible, then 4. Mitigate the hazard by utilizing administrative controls (e.g. training, written procedures, signage/postings, etc.). If this is not adequate, then, 5. Mitigate the hazard through use of PPE.
