How do you integrate microgrids into the power grid?

Microgrids offer several distinct advantages. They enable the extension of power to regions with challenging grid connectivity, ensuring that even remote areas have access to electricity. By harnessing local resources such as hydropower, solar, and wind, microgrids promote sustainability and reduce dependence on centralized energy sources. Additionally, they minimize transmission losses by generating power locally, resulting in increased efficiency. Microgrids are particularly beneficial for congested urban areas where space constraints limit traditional power system expansions. Moreover, they facilitate resource sharing among customers connected to the network, enhancing resilience and optimizing energy utilization.

The world is moving away from centralised power stations. Distributed energy driven is becoming key to the future of the grid. Microgrids offer a variety of benefits which will depend upon where they are deployed and to which type of customer. Commercial and industrial businesses will judge investment based upon the energy trilemma of balancing cost, carbon emissions and resilience. Microgrids can achieve all three, but it will depend upon the reliability of the local grid, inherent carbon emissions of the local power supply network and price of power locally. Whether in Africa, South Asia or the Americas, the prime drives are typically resilience, cost and carbon reduction.

One enabling technology that adds value in Microgrid adoption is Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), particularly Li-ion battery powered ones. With storage capabilities the Microgrid can modulate between charge and discharge of the BESS to maintain the power balance to match total generation resource vs total load.

To minimize and mitigate the challenges of Micro-grids, there are some possible solutions include developing smart grid technologies and applications for real-time communication and control, as well as flexible regulatory frameworks and participation in the power system. Moreover use of the local resources and also minimize losses related with our power system while generating and distributing power to the consumers.

Microgrids have a wide variety of benefit, and these benefits can vary drastically regionally depending on your operations and needs. Do you want to reduce your demand charges? Or, do you just want to diversify from single source generation and consumption? There are a lot of challenges but let me highlight the ones that I see in my job everyday. 1. A lot of stakeholders with varying end goals and a general lack of understanding how complex of an integration challenge a set of DERs can create. 2. A lot of DERs are still fairly new and their behavior/response are not well understood. 3. Control system (specially EMS) need to handle both upstream grid commands and downstream equipment behavior, yet not enough customers understand the value, and hence think about it much later in the design stage. This can lead to selecting EMS vendors based on price and less than optimal performance when deployed.

The challenge of the microgrid starts with understanding what the local site's needs will be. What is the existing power profile and how will this change? Understanding this must be done before you can start to develop a model. Next is the actual approach to modelling - how do you accurately predict the configuration of a microgrid both commercially and then from an engineering perspective? Do you rely on spreadsheets, off the shelf electronic platforms. Next how are you contracting? Is each component procured in a silo - i.e. solar, battery, thermal generation or can someone wrap the supply of this. Then when it is installed does the equipment performance match the actual requirements of the facilities power needs?

Microgrids can be very diverse from a technical perspective. There are many questions to ask Do you want single axis tracking for solar? When is your peak and do you need to cover it with a microgrid? How critical is your operation, how important is redundancy to you? What are your decarbonization goals? How do you want to interact with your utility (if at all?) All of these questions (and others) must be considered when designing a microgrid. While microgrids are effective in facilitating a substantial integration of renewable energy, achieving a 100% renewable energy scenario remains challenging primarily due to economic factors. Solutions for microgrids include companies that are able to accurately monitor energy demand of a facility, those that can seamlessly model a microgrid configuration then install the same equipment that is modelled. Are you relying on consultants to model your installation and do they have pre-existing relationships with suppliers that may influence the solutions they are providing to you. Solutions also include the company that is installing your equipment then also maintaining it. Can you combine intensive maintenance of a combined heat and power unit alongside the less frequent maintenance of batteries or solar panels?

Driven by a global need to decarbonize, microgrid solutions are evolving rapidly. Storage, for example, will eventually diversify away from lithium as newer technologies come online that can reduce installed storage costs below $200/kWh (within 5 years). This, combined with long term solar price reduction trends, and the application of AI to Energy Managment (see Heila), create microgrid solutions that will become increasingly competitive vs conventional fossil fuel generation.

As the AC power is ussualy provided by inverters(equipment without any mechanical inertia as a rotating AC generator) the grid can become week and unstable when there are big and sudden consumption increase/decrease. That's why we don't have to forget about biomass as an green energy source that can still use a steam turbine to provide energy and rotating mass that can help mittigate local sudden energy demand.

Firstly one must define a microgrid. The term microgrid is vague and can be twisted to meet the intentions of the supplier you are talking to. From my perspective microgrids can be simple - i.e. an islanded solution consisting of gas engines plus non-synchronised diesel engines. This can be further expanded to incorporate solar energy. Adding batteries adds a further element of complexity facilitating the time shifting of energy and the ability to be more creative with creating value propositions when connected to the grid. Finally how many power generation and storage assets are integrated? Will you need a centralised microgrid controller or a decentralised controller. Microgrids and decentralised energy is set to become more and more common. There are numerous suppliers for microgrid controllers and I envisage the transition to greater complexity and the decentralisation of control. Resilience will become the key driver due to the increased frequency of severe weather incidents and instability of electricity grids. This is due to the closure of centralised power stations and the increasing reliance on intermittent wind and solar energy. New technologies such as carbon capture at decentralised level will help further decarbonise power and can potentially support carbon negativity in the case of biogas.

Renewable energy is ussually not available on demand, that's why storage is a big part that must be developed. As the electric cars are more and more present, the grid issues are becoming more and more visible as it was not designed for both bidirectional power circulation and for the ammount of power required by a fast charger(sometimes equivalent to an entire appartment block). Without investing both in the grid(wires, transformers, protection, also the invisible part) and the chargers we will begin to see more and more grid faults. Just by thinking in a 10 houses neighbour with 6 of them having fast chargers and used in the same time at night without any coordination that zone will have a demand exceeding by far the grid's capacity.

Microgrids mean different things to different people. Understand who you are speaking to and agree a definition of what a microgrid actually is. Sustainability whilst a key factor in developing a microgrid is often not the primary interest. Across Africa and South Asia we have seen islanded projects for many years with the primary driver being resilience due to an unstable electricity network. With an increase in severe weather incidents and increasing reliance on intermittent renewable energy we are likely to see resilience being the primary driver for their deployment.
