It's important that learning goals are SMARTIE (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound, Inclusive, and Equitable). When you have goals and objectives in mind, I would recommend engaging others (anyone -- not just your peers) to start gathering feedback and insights that will eventually contribute to deepening your ideas. Often, others are able to help us step back, reflect, and better convey these goals in a way that can reach a larger audience. Engaging others to review your goals not only helps you develop your ideas, but it's absolutely critical in ensuring that you have equity and inclusion in mind before you begin developing materials. You can also use SMARTIE as a framework for evaluating your finalized goals!

Although some content does lend itself better to certain formats, it's important to remember that you have a large audience; ultimately, everyone has their own preferences, strengths, and limitations. I always advocate for providing learners with some choice. Yes, video is great! But someone will ultimately either prefer to read or have terrible bandwidth that makes the contents of the video difficult to interpret. If you already have a script or set of slides for the video, why not provide it as an alternative handout? This also provides those watching the video with an artifact they can use to take notes or reflect on the materials. Delivering content in diverse ways and providing learners with choices will strengthen the course!

Consider the student journey in a MOOC. The journey doesn’t have to start and end with the computer screen. Think of activities that are authentic and can be shared in the student’s learning ecosystem. When they report back to the collective, they bring their context and culture into the environment - architecting a glimpse of their world. This is the power of a MOOC - providing a platform for connecting the world one student at a time.
