Prior to engaging in any client communication, it is imperative to undertake comprehensive and thorough research on a diverse array of subjects. This proactive approach is driven by the recognition that the focal points of a potential client's interest may vary widely.

Given the confusing nature of B2B buying process, it's becoming harder and harder to define who the 'prospect' is. For example, the conversation might be with a "gatekeeper" and not the "approver" whose priorities may be different. Under these circumstances, it's always a safer bet to start the conversation with an "industry insight" that disrupts their understanding of the market. To that extent, deep research is a must. This will serve as the hook to continue the conversation, which typically ends with a 'Would you be interested in...' that advances the conversation to the next level.

Every client believes that their situation is unique and always will have a reason to say "Well, that does not apply to us because..". We have to remember that 'status quo' is an easier option for a buyer than to take a risk. So there is really no 'relevant' story. Hence, holding of a customer story till the time the prospect asks for it is a better option.

I use a in-house 4Ps of Business Storytelling format. For <People>, who face this <Problem>, our solution <Product> helps them to achieve <Possibilities> Imagine describing Airbnb to someone who has not heard of it at all. The the format would be like - "For casual and business travelers <PEOPLE> who overpay for the unwanted bells and whistles of hotels <PROBLEM>, Airbnb is an online platform that connects them with locals who are interested in renting out their property <PRODUCT>, so that both parties get a good payoff <POSSIBILITY>. Would you be interested to know more?"

My recommendation is to keep the language simple. It's easier to connect with prospects that way than to complicate the story with business jargons. Asking ChatGPT to <Simplify this sentence> is a good option these days, especially if salespeople are sensitive about their script.

There are many AI based tools where people can record themselves and get recommendations on where to improve. While it is important to practice, a better strategy would be to get fundamentals of storytelling structure right, so that the responses can be engaging all the time. No call goes as per plan and we have to constantly improvise on the go.

There is no better story in sales than a true story, using ways you have helped a similar client overcome a challenge or problem can work incredibly well.
