An example I’ve seen of the importance of valuing and following Safety procedures was the powerful testimony of a former refinery worker called Remember Charlie. Because he took shortcuts it resulted in burns over 50 percent of his body and the detrimental effects it had on his family, especially his daughter. I believe having a strong safety culture emphasizes that employees are valued and we all want to go home back to our families unhurt. I’ve had the benefit of experienced employees give their input and advice on how they do their work safely and how they practice safety at home during training and meetings where safety topics were the standing agenda. Safety by walking the work area by all and stopping unsafe work is effective.

In four decades of industrial experience I have never experienced nor witnessed competent experienced employees resisting or otherwise adversely reacting to changes in safety protocols as presented to them or to new employees Should any employee express any concerns or concerns over any aspect of revised safety protocols, respect must be accorded. This is not deference, it is the respect of prudence as the errant equipment, deflagration, venomous animal ought to be respected. Observations and questions are key to understanding, perspectives constructive to honest and useful confrontation (rather than costly and risky conflict) Complaints, inertia, arbitrary and capricious objections might perhaps be behaviors of former staff
