How do you handle networking with individuals who have different communication styles than yours?

When networking with individuals who have different communication styles, I focus on being adaptable and empathetic. I start by actively listening to understand their perspective and observing their verbal and non-verbal cues. I then adjust my communication style to better match theirs, whether that means being more direct or more diplomatic. I ask open-ended questions to encourage dialogue and find common ground to build a connection. Most importantly, I maintain respect and patience, appreciating our differences and using them as an opportunity to learn and grow. This approach fosters strong and effective relationships.

When i got a new direct report the first thing I asked her a number of questions to enable us to work effectively together. Such as.. 'how do you like to communicate? how often should we catch up? how do you want to catch up? it made such a difference to building an effective and great working relationship. Sometime a little ask at the beginning to establish those key things just set you up for success.

Active listening is hard to do but once mastered you will establish such great relationships because at the hear of active listening is relaly hearing the other person and more importantly them feeling like they have been heard.

In my business communication class, I was taught effective listening skills by Tatiana Kolovou and Brenda Bailey-Hughes, as my second training while learning communication. This teaching helped me not only in professional life but also personal life. I used to consistently speak my thoughts or understanding during diffcult conversations, which usually ended with breaking of relations and not finding correct solutions to problems. After getting the training, I started using three tips in my daily routine; that is, (1) Accept that the situation might have a different angle of looking, (2)Try listening what the opposite person has to say for the problem or situation or discussion, and then (3) Take few seconds to understand it before reacting.

I have no problem leading discussions and speaking up, but I am intentional about creating space in the conversation for those quieter than myself so they can share as much, or as little, as they’re comfortable with. In addition, when someone with big energy and a big personality comes into play, I am comfortable as a listener; asking questions and facilitating conversations rather than leading it.

When networking with people who have different communication styles, it's important to first observe and assess their preferences. Notice if they favor direct, concise interactions or more elaborate discussions, and adapt your approach accordingly. Active listening is crucial—focus fully on the speaker, understand their message, and show your engagement through nodding or asking clarifying questions. Flexibility is key; adjust your style to match theirs without losing authenticity. Finding common ground can also help bridge gaps. After the interaction, follow up thoughtfully based on their preferred communication method. Embracing these differences enriches your networking experience and fosters meaningful connections.
