How do you handle complex sustainability leadership?

I experienced this aspect very early in my career. It took much work to help customers understand the benefits of the sustainable project. This is where I had to connect with the people who were respected among the customers and conveyed my approach and the resultant benefits for the customer. With their help, the project was initiated for a few customers, and on seeing the use, others understood and trusted the work. The project was completed well, with many helping hands from the customers.

Complex Sustainability Leadership is a delicate balancing act. First as a Leader you must understand and embrace that ultimately you can only control your actions and attitudes. You must be innovative in your thinking and adapt your plan to conform to reality when reality does not conform to your plan. Encourage new strategies and ideas from your team. Be aware that innovations and new ideas will come most often from the new/young team members looking at situations with fresh eyes more often then someone with years of experience and often set in their ways. You must always keep your teams eye on the ball, encourage adaptiveness but you must hold firm to the primary goal and the core values of your team or company.

Embracing uncertainty refers to adopting a mindset that acknowledges and accepts the presence of ambiguity, unpredictability, and change. It involves being comfortable with not having all the answers and recognizing that the future is inherently uncertain. Instead of resisting or avoiding uncertainty, individuals and organizations that embrace it see it as an opportunity for growth, learning, and adaptation. Embracing uncertainty requires a willingness to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing circumstances. It involves being able to adjust plans, strategies, and actions as new information emerges. By being nimble and responsive, individuals and organizations can better navigate uncertain situations .

To effectively navigate ambiguity and paradox, leaders must create spaces for open dialogue and promote a culture of inclusivity and respect. This encourages the free flow of ideas and perspectives, even those that challenge conventional wisdom. All Leadership is really Change Management, and the only certainty in life is change, so once you start from that premise and embrace the uncertainty of tomorrow, today becomes an easier place to navigate. We all know that when we were born, we were not given a manual for "Life" a book or operating code of practice, this came from learned experiences, guidance from our parents or guardians and from day one you balance the competing demands. So why would it be different in Leadership? Why not just use all your gained experience to guide you and your teams in to future which is the best you can design, live by the morals you believe and do the best you can, for yourself and therefore others to do the same.

This is true. In my work, I received the plan to execute the work, which was executable at most places, but at some, it was not due to technical constraints. My people advised me to a different actionable plan which I verified and sent my recommendation to superiors. I was glad to receive permission to proceed, and we completed the work.

Fostering collaboration includes creating communication channels and processes for people to interact across departments and functions. Without structures in place to encourage collaboration, people tend to default to their own silos and focus on their immediate responsibilities. Creating cross-functional groups to work on specific issues or projects, encouraging time to interact informally and discuss ideas, and providing development opportunities that involve different areas all help build collaboration.

Collaboration is a powerful approach that involves individuals or groups working together towards a common goal. It is a key ingredient for success in various contexts, including workplaces, communities, and creative endeavors. Collaborative efforts foster synergy, innovation, and the collective harnessing of diverse skills, perspectives, and resources. Effective collaboration relies on open and transparent communication. Active listening plays a vital role, allowing participants to understand each other's perspectives, concerns, and ideas. Clear and respectful communication fosters trust, ensures clarity, and helps resolve conflicts that may arise during the collaborative process.

This could not be more true in the case of complex projects. Trust proves to be the key to success. Involving the customers to collaborate not only helps gain their confidence but also helps in project progress. Sometimes you may need to train people for this, but it is beneficial in the long run.

Self-development begins with self-awareness. It involves understanding your strengths, weaknesses, values, beliefs, and emotions. Self-awareness allows you to recognize areas for improvement, identify your passions, and align your actions with your values. Developing yourself means actively working towards personal growth, improvement, and self-awareness. It involves investing time, effort, and resources to enhance your skills, knowledge, abilities, and overall well-being. Self-development is a lifelong journey that enables you to reach your full potential, achieve your goals, and lead a fulfilling life.

In our work, we face constant challenges with complex projects and new situations. Dealing with uncertainty requires smart collaboration with our teams and stakeholders. Transparency with the team is vital, and I always aim to make the best of every situation. While some things are beyond our control, we can still influence others. So, let's stay flexible, true to our values, learn from one another, and be honest in our actions. Embracing reflection and a growth mindset is essential for success. This way, we can handle anything that comes our way and maintain sustainability.

In my view, sustainability in a complex environment shares many similarities with the Agile mindset. I have been blessed to have one of the best in the canine industry as a mentor and my father. I watched him get off the ground with one dog and a lot of determination. He took something he is passionate about and created a lucrative business venture with the perfect timing. I can recall times that my parents had to sacrifice and even take on part time work in order to make ends meet and keep the business running smoothly. He has taught me to embrace and appreciate our four legged friends and how to extend my passion and create a business that I am equally as passionate about, that is beneficial to my community. When you can take one single thing and find many ways in which it is useful, you can define sustainability in your industry.

I absolutely love the concept of everyone being a leader, regardless of their seniority or title. We all possess unique strengths that can benefit and mentor others. When I engage with my stakeholders, I try to embrace curiosity and fearlessly ask questions to understand their motivations and challenges. Learning from them sparks fresh ideas and opportunities to innovate in our approach. That's why fostering diverse and inclusive environments is crucial - it enriches our perspectives and drives positive change in how we operate.
