1 Define your scope

In my experience, it is helpful to utilize a spreadsheet to organize sources. Some important elements to add on this spreadsheet include the year of publication, source in which the publication appeared, and a permanent link to the article. Additionally, I prefer to note the main reasons I found each particular article to be relevant within this spreadsheet for quick reference.

3 Evaluate the sources

The third step is to evaluate the sources that you have found, using critical appraisal skills and criteria. You should assess the quality, credibility, and validity of each source, considering aspects such as the author, publication, methodology, results, and implications. You should also identify the strengths, weaknesses, gaps, and contradictions in the literature, as well as the main themes and trends.

From my perspective, another important element of evaluating sources is considering where else an article you have located has been referenced. For instance, if an article is cited by multiple other prominent recent works in the field, it may be more relevant and applicable than another work that is not cited elsewhere.

4 Synthesize the sources

The fourth step is to synthesize the sources that you have evaluated, using analytical and integrative skills and techniques. You should not simply summarize or describe each source, but rather compare and contrast them, highlighting their similarities and differences, agreements and disagreements, and connections and implications. You should also organize your synthesis according to a logical structure, such as chronological, thematic, or methodological.

The fifth step is to write the review, using clear and coherent language and style. I have found it to be important to begin the literature review with broad statements related to my topic of interest. From there, continuing with cohesive statements that provide increasingly narrow statements that align with my research question has been the style that has worked most effectively for me.

6 Revise the review

The sixth and final step is to revise the review, using feedback and editing skills and tools. You should seek feedback from your peers, supervisors, or experts, and incorporate their suggestions and comments into your review. You should also check and correct any errors or inconsistencies in your content, language, and style, using tools such as grammar checkers, plagiarism checkers, or proofreaders.
