How do you give a speech without notes?

Knowing your purpose and audience is like being a detective and a chef at the same time. First, you put on your detective hat and do some sleuthing to figure out who your audience is, what they care about, and what they are expecting from you. Then, you switch to your chef hat and craft a message that caters to their tastes, needs, and expectations. Finally, you serve up a speech that is not only delicious but also nutritious, leaving your audience satisfied and enlightened.

Giving a speech without notes is like playing the piano without sheet music. You must practice and practice and practice. It is only after you have immersed your body and mind and emotions into the song that you can play it without sheet music – and it plays you as you allow your body to express beauty. That is the same for a great speech. I usually memorize 3 versions of what I want to say, and although I may seem to be speaking as improvisation, it is no more improvised than the soul-filled hippocampal interpretation at the moment. Because of immense preparation, I can feel the audience and understand what we both need, and the speech without notes arrives.

To deliver an effective speech, it is important to have an in depth knowledge of the subject. It is helpful to note down the pointers that you wish to cover in your discourse and link them together through smooth transitions, which effectively conveys the key message to your listeners. Remember, your speech is powerful if only it is perceived well by your audience. In fact, when you speak without notes, it gives you the flexibility to alter your talk as per the listeners. This will also help to make two way communication and ensure that the interaction is more impactful.

Delivering a speech without notes enables you to engage more directly with your audience. It impresses people. Don’t be put off by nerves. That’s normal. Speaking without notes, while more challenging, makes your speech more compelling. Getting it right requires you to think through not only the content but the rhythm, to ensure your ideas flow naturally. This requires you to practice. In doing so, it’s best to stand up and speak out loud, including in front of a mirror, imagining you are in front of your audience. Once you do this you will likely further tweak the content and play around with the order of things. It takes time, but getting the flow and rhythm of the speech right, will make the speech easier to remember and more engaging.

The two most important things when giving a presentation or speech: know your audience and identify your throughline/purpose. Your throughline is the one thing you want your audience to know. It's the gift you are giving your audience, that thing you want your audience to remember when they leave. If you don't identify a throughline before you start outlining or writing, you will waste a significant amount time. After you identify your thoughline, think of your audience. How can you get them to step into your story? Knowing your audience, what they value and what motivates them will put you on a path where the audience will see themselves as a character in this story.

Outlining your main points and structure is like building a house of cards. First, you lay down the foundation by identifying your key messages and the main points you want to make. Then, you carefully stack the cards by organizing your points in a logical and coherent order. Finally, you add the finishing touches by linking your points together with smooth transitions and reinforcing your key messages in the conclusion. And voila! You have a sturdy structure that won't collapse under the pressure of public speaking.

It is very important to develop your speech even if you plan to give it without notes. Do not try to just “wing it.” If others are taking the time to listen to your speech, it is important to spend time architecting a well throughout message to deliver. Then learn/practice the message well enough to give it without notes, but not so much it comes off rehearsed. However, if you don’t feel confident presenting without notes, don’t force it. It is more important that you, as the presenter, feel confident and prepared to deliver the message you have prepared.

If you use an outline, keep it VERY simple (three key ideas or fewer TOTAL). Complex outlines become more of a mental distraction than an assist for speakers. Better yet, share a story that includes your key ideas for the presentation. You can recall stories from your childhood that you haven't heard in YEARS because story is EASY to recall....even without notes!

Instead of scripting your talk word for word, use big ideas that you can talk freely about. I like to say, don't write your talk with a pen, write it with a sharpie so you're more inclined to write big picture ideas. Another method I teach in Mic Drop Workshop is called Bump Set Spike. Bump: sets up your lesson, why should the audience listen?. Set: set the scene, tell a relevant story to the lesson. Spike: give the audience a short, punchy takeaway they can remember.

Do The Opposite! Sounds counter-intuitive, but go with me! Using structure, thesis statements, conclusions, examples -- always led me to generic, machine-like prose. So, I went the other way. Now, I start with a Word. Your main point condensed into a word, a concept, a feeling. Build around that word -- like a solar system around the Sun ??. That word powers your narrative, that word is your core, the soul of your talk. Do this for 3 to 5 main words -- and they'll build their own structures and transitions, bringing your talk to life. Whenever you feel lost, the word will guide you, like the North Star. ?? Just try this emergent, organic, bottom up approach -- it'll always guide you right.

For visuals, I have used a simple strategy. Take your slides and decompose them into three parts. 1. The headline - should tell the story on its own 2. The key fact - should be an eye-opener and easy to remember 3. The visual - should convey the same story as the headline and fact without 1 and 2 being present. If all three are strong on their own, their combination is very powerful.

Using mnemonic devices and visual aids is like having a secret toolkit during a magic show. First, you equip yourself with mnemonic devices, which are like magical spells that help you remember key points and details. Then, you pull out your visual aids, which are like the magical props that help illustrate your points and captivate your audience. Finally, you combine the magic spells and props to create a mesmerizing performance that leaves your audience spellbound and your message unforgettable.

Great Topic. Mnemonic devices and visual aids are very helpful. To list a few: Acronyms, rhymes, visualizations and Infographics are a few. I specially love visualizations, encouraging your clients to create mental images of the concepts and and the steps needed to achieve them. Visualization can be a powerful technique for boosting motivation and focus.

Lead with your voice, not with your visuals. Visuals reinforce your voice, they don't replace it. Write out your presentation before you start coming up with visual aids, analogies, metaphors, etc. The only purpose of these devices is to help the audience understand your message. If you use a visuals first model, your talk will not have the focus and power it could. Additionally, if your voice is flat (think not much vocal variation/variety), it could be because you are allowing your visual aids to replace the impact of your voice. Your voice this the most important tool in your speaker tool box. Always run through your presentation without your visuals to ensure your voice is doing the work, not all the extra stuff. Lead with your voice!

Rehearse multiple times to build confidence and ensure smooth delivery. It's also important to breathe, speak slowly, and adjust your pace based on audience reactions. Finally, embrace spontaneity and don't worry about small mistakes.

Record yourself and watch/listen to it back. Do this in three ways to notice different things: 1. Listen to it with no visuals, you’ll notice your speech patterns, tone and pace. 2. Watch it with no sound. You’ll notice your body language. 3. Watch it with sound, you’ll start to see how the two combine, and how others will perceive your speech.

There is no shortcut to learning your speech. It just takes time. If working from a manuscript, I always recommend to learn your talk, not memorize it. When you memorize your talk, if you forget one word, you will forget every word after it. Each word depends on the word before it. Learning your talk is different. You read your talk over and over. After you read through it 5 times you'll be able to start looking up. Keep reading it. When you are looking up 50% of the time, you start using a keyword/phrase outline. You are reverse engineering your speech from a manuscript to an keyword outline. To those words/phrases that trigger your memory.

When practicing your speech, try recording it and then looking over the transcript. In comparing your practice run with your written speech, you may find better ways of expressing an idea, or discover a more pithy way to get a point across.

Relaxing and enjoying your speech is like being the captain of a ship on a sunny day. First, you prepare your ship (your speech) thoroughly, so you know it's seaworthy. Then, you set sail with confidence, knowing that you've done everything you can to prepare. Finally, you relax and enjoy the journey, taking in the sights and sounds of the sea (your audience) and remembering that, at the end of the day, public speaking is not just about the destination, but also about the journey.

When you're relaxed, you're more likely to communicate effectively, connect with your audience, and appear confident. If you can relax and enjoy giving a speech, I envy you. I love speaking when I'm confident. But mostly, your heart is going to be racing. In those cases, the best I can do is to tell myself that I'm going to feel amazing after this is done. I'm going to buy myself the biggest donut I can find and watch Netflix. Just get through this and the world will be a wonderful place.

Own your speech. Think of it as a conversation. A conversation is meant to flow, be natural and have a dash of confidence. It's makes it not only enjoyable to you but to your audience.

Enjoy the speech, enjoy the work, but also try and think how your speech could become enjoyable to the audience too. An orator understands this and always strives for a speech enjoyable by the audience. Our brain appreciates and remembers things more if they were delivered in a way to rouse pleasure, than if simply delivered and loaded. And better remembrance translates to better delivery on your part.

Nailing a speech without notes and blowing the minds of audiences with aha moments are one of the high highs of life. Once you dial in on audience needs and relevant content, to achieve that feat: Focus more on concept chaining (logical sequence of themes within the speech) and less on specific words. Specific words restrict flow (like crutches) and shifts focus to pre-meditated words when presenting versus bigger concepts, which is what audiences react to. This mindset enables the speaker to comes across as more authentic and communicate emotions strongly resulting in deeper audience connections. With this approach even when speaking again on the same topic, the narrative will sound new and fresh while the concepts remain the same.

Trust yourself! When you are willing to make a joke when you forget what you wanted to say you put everyone at ease including yourself. Bring the audience in. I like to tell them what I am going to tell them then have 3 stories ready in my mind that illustrate the things I am teaching. I close with an ask and a recap of what was taught. Find the easy button and hit it often. It is not hard when you see the talk in the eyes of 3 mini stories that you know so well. Google someone's first talk before they were famous. Now take the pressure of yourself :)

Give yourself a framework to learn how to deliver with no notes. Try having them to hand but not using them. Consider simply relying of bullet points. Experiment with doing parts (perhaps start and end) with no notes and a few prompts on the details in the middle. Practicing different techniques over time will make sure you have a good chance of developing the skill of speaking without notes
