1 Define clear expectations and criteria

This helps them understand the purpose and value of their learning, as well as the standards and expectations they need to meet. You can also involve your students in co-creating the learning objectives, rubrics, and feedback mechanisms, so that they have a voice and a stake in their own learning.

To help students co-create the success criteria, you can use transferable goals. These are goals that are relevant from one grade level to the next grade level. The stop, start, and continue approach is a method that adults use in the workplace that children may also use in the classroom to create and define transferable goals. Start- what is missing in our goal setting that we want to start doing? Stop- what goals are not helping us understand the value of learning? Continue-what is working that we want to continue doing when we define our success criteria?

Another key element of fostering student agency is to provide your students with choice and voice in their learning. This means giving them options and autonomy in selecting the topics, activities, resources, and formats that suit their interests, needs, and preferences. It also means listening to their opinions, feedback, and suggestions, and encouraging them to share their ideas, questions, and perspectives with you and their peers. 3 Support self-regulation and reflection

Fostering student agency also requires supporting your students to develop self-regulation and reflection skills. Self-regulation is the ability to monitor, control, and adjust one's own learning processes, such as setting goals, planning strategies, managing time, seeking help, and evaluating progress. Reflection is the ability to think critically and metacognitively about one's own learning experiences, such as identifying strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and achievements. You can support your students to develop these skills by providing them with tools, prompts, and guidance to help them plan, monitor, and evaluate their learning.

Finally, fostering student agency also involves modeling and celebrating agency in yourself and your students. Modeling agency is showing your students how you take charge of your own learning and growth, such as setting goals, seeking feedback, trying new things, and overcoming challenges. Celebrating agency is recognizing and acknowledging your students' efforts, achievements, and growth, as well as their autonomy, voice, and responsibility. You can model and celebrate agency by sharing your own learning stories, highlighting your students' successes and struggles, and creating a culture of praise and appreciation.
