How do you foster innovation and learning with EFQM?

In EFQM 2020 Model, the criteria divided into three sections: Direction (Why do it?), Execution (How to do it?), and Results (What is achieved?.

The EFQM Model, a globally recognised framework that supports organisations in managing change and improving performance. EFQM has experienced a number of improvement cycles over the years to make sure that it not only remains relevant for any organisation wanting a long term, sustainable future. The EFQM model is non-prescriptive and does not advocate strict adherence to rules or procedures. Instead, it provides a broad overview of what is required to achieve organizational excellence. To facilitate this, the model incorporates a self-assessment framework measuring the strengths and weaknesses of an organization across all its operations.

The EFQM model represents a proactive approach to organizational change using Deming's Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) cycle. The EFQM model is similar to the Baldrige Excellence Framework (BEF) which assesses how well your profile, processes, and end results align. I suspect that combining the approach-to-change methodology in the EFQM model will expedite the production of the processes and results assessed in the BEF. Indeed, a common approach for organizations using the BEF is to use PDCA.

The EFQM Model structure is based on the simple but powerful logic of asking three questions: WHY: DIRECTION “Why” does this organisation exist? What purpose does it fulfil? Why this particular Strategy… HOW: EXECUTION “How” does it intend to deliver on its Purpose and its Strategy… WHAT: RESULTS “What” has it actually achieved to date? “What” does it intend to achieve tomorrow… There are 7 criteria( Direction x 2, Execution x 3 & Results x 2) developed by EFQM that shall be referred by any organisation to conduct their self-assessment on current position and establish a development plan. Once you develop your own 7 Criteria, conduct a Diagnostic using RADAR tool given by EFQM. You can also use a dynamic tool/application from EFQM

While the EFQM model could be a valuable framework to holistically improve organizational performance for large organizations, it may be difficult for small and mid-sized companies to adopt this tool due to various factors like the time that may require to understand the complexity of the process, it's documentation, costs involved especially for companies with limited resources and insignificant financial goals.
