?? In my opinion, understanding the need for frugal innovation begins with identifying the core challenges faced by your customers and stakeholders. ?? Identify gaps Assess unmet needs to uncover opportunities where innovation can provide solutions efficiently, without unnecessary costs or waste. ?? Leverage resources Use existing capabilities and networks to maximize value, optimizing resources to drive innovative solutions effectively. ?? Focus on value Deliver more with less by concentrating on essential aspects that create meaningful impact and drive success in a cost-effective way. ?? Identifying the need is the cornerstone of frugal innovation, setting the stage for practical, resourceful, and impactful solutions.

That's very simple spend time working in a not for profit organisation. There is usually no budget for innovation or any related fields other than FTE. This forces you to focus on opportunities for constrained innovation leveraging unique strengths, unfair advantages and collaborative arrangements to drive innovation and impact from within.

You need to establish a culture enriched with psychological safety to drive innovation - for this, it doesn't cost much but it requires intelligence and humility and good leadership. Culture is built on leading through example - celebrate attempts that may not have paid dividends for acknowledge the attempt and encourage to keep going. Leaders need to show their own vulnerability.

Innovation is not just about throwing money at the next big thing. It is about getting creative with what we have and empowering our team to do the same. A happy, collaborative team is the engine of careful innovation. By focusing on their well-being and fostering a culture of open ideas, we can solve problems cleverly, deliver exceptional value, and all while having a blast doing it!

Frugal innovation is not about cutting corners, it is about being smart. It is about efficiency, about eliminating waste in everything we do. It is about creating solutions that are good for the planet, good for our customers, and good for business. Now that is innovation I can get behind!

In a scenario inspired by readings, a social enterprise aimed to tackle the issue of inaccessible clean water in rural areas. They adopted the design thinking approach to deeply understand the community's struggles. Through interviews and observations, they learned about the daily routines and the burdensome journey to fetch water. Ideation sessions led to various innovative solutions, such as a community-based water filtration system that was both affordable and maintainable by local residents. Prototyping involved creating a basic model of the system using locally sourced materials, which was then tested within the community for feedback.

The notion of doing more with less is an ongoing challenge in many organizations. From my experience I have learnt: 1. Do not compromise quality. It should not come at the expense of adding value to customers. It is not about cutting corners, it 'forces' me to be more resourceful and creative with what I have. 2. Frugal innovation must be sustainable to create a long term impact, not a quick fix, that keeps needing fixes. When done right it is a foundation for growth that has a lasting impact.

It’s critical to not hamper the innovation idea generation by imposing rigid constraints (such as cost) on the creative process. Once you have the new ideas then sorting and evaluating them against other factors (like cost) is the best method. In our process, we would assess new ideas against a value vs resource axis (basically 'bang for the buck'). In many cases, you could visually see the what the idea execution would require and the worth benefiting from the spent resources. This was a simple, yet effective tool. In addition, sometimes we would do a second innovation workshop on how to specifically lower cost/resource of a key solution, doubling down on the innovative process.

Defining the principles that underpin frugal innovation is crucial for cultivating a culture and mindset that embraces it. Frugal innovation isn't solely about cutting costs but rather about maximizing efficiency and effectiveness within constraints. These principles include doing more with less, adopting a lean approach, prioritizing simplicity, embracing limitations, and collaborating closely with stakeholders. By adhering to these principles, organizations can streamline processes, reduce unnecessary complexities, and focus on delivering value where it matters most. Furthermore, involving customers, partners, and communities in the innovation process fosters inclusivity and ensures that solutions are truly tailored to meet their needs

I would say strip away bureaucracy and create space for rapid experimentation. Give each member a small budget they can use without approvals. Implement a "no-questions-asked" policy for low-cost trials of new ideas. Set up a weekly show-and-tell where everyone shares their attempts, successful or not. Reward learning over outcomes - celebrate smart failures as much as wins. Create a skills marketplace where team members can trade expertise. Remember, true empowerment isn't about motivation speeches, it's about removing obstacles and trusting your people to innovate.

Empower people by creating an environment built on responsibility and ownership at every level. Innovation, responsibility and personal commitment go hand in hand. It allows people to disrupt and think differently - in turn that diversity of mindset cultivates innovation!

Use the learning as a bench-mark, not copy & paste. Some solutions that worked in other places will not work in your place. Understand your business needs well, do gap analysis, select learned activities that will help close the gap, adjust them to suit your needs, impliment and monitor.

Going frugal on innovations specially around tested and open source solutions with a collective intelligence engagment mechanism allows small innovations to smoothly increase the transition towards more digitisation. Frugal innivation in the context of smart cities also supports communities where digital litteracy is not high specially among aging towns or villages.

Frugal innovation has thrived across diverse cultures, contexts, and sectors for centuries. Anyway, it's important to be open-minded and avoid confirmation and survivorship bias! Understanding what didn't work is crucial to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Focusing solely on success stories can create unrealistic expectations and hinder creativity by discouraging experimentation and risk-taking. In a frugal innovation mindset, leaders play a pivotal role. They decentralize knowledge and decision-making, creating autonomous and trustworthy teams. Their strategic oversight and minimal intervention ensure smooth and efficient operations, fostering a proactive and self-sufficient team culture.

Keep in mind that a culture of innovation is part of your larger corporate culture – and changes to your culture are going to take time. Also understand that while some people within your company will welcome innovation, there are many who will push back: some employees want to 'do things the way they have always been done', some are uncomfortable with risk and uncertainty, and others avoid innovation for fear of getting additional work added to their plate. Leadership needs to champion innovation throughout the company and communicate support for the process. Innovation requires long term efforts. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

It’s not always about lower cost or cost cutting. Every customer understands that in order to save money, they must at first spend money. The key is to develop a comprehensive business case that shows the return on investment with an acceptable timeframe.

Provide training on cost-effective problem-solving techniques and leveraging generative AI to enhance creativity and streamline processes. Intellectual property (IP) serves as a valuable knowledge source, offering insights into existing innovations and preventing redundant efforts. Clear IP guidelines and employee education ensure innovations are safeguarded, promoting a sustainable cycle of innovation. Regularly reviewing and update IP policies to incorporate new technologies and AI advancements to remain innovative and resourceful.
