We are undergoing this process now and I was struck by how diluted the voting process was by presenting similar ideas as separate ideas. We voted on everything exactly as it was presented and took the top 10 ideas, despite the fact that some of the lower voted items were quite similar. Wouldn't it make more sense to combine similar ideas first, before voting? What am I missing?

Much like Ahab and his white whale a brainstorming session is a bit of a fairytale. Similar to the invented typology of an innovation center, it suggests that the ‘best ideas’ can be created at a specific time or place with assigned parameters such as gaining consensus via dots on a wall. Often the best ideas are largely inspired by something completely unrelated, in non specific places, with limited set criteria. True brainstorming is infinite in its exploration and can often be perceived as playful in its purest form. True brainstorming is limitless in its ability to inspire creativity. It challenges perceived standards, norms, and perceptions. It encourages dialog and ideation to generate ideas beyond what was originally envisioned.
