One thing I've found that is also helpful is sticking to research ethics and ensure one's research integrity is established. By so doing other aspects of research will naturally align. The ethics is critically important, while some institutions do not pay attention to this , it is the duty of a researcher to ensure both research ethics and integrity is established in the course of the study
