Explaining the role of a champion - as your organization has defined it - can help these stakeholders decide if they want to be part of the DG effort. If they are willing to take on the role, and have the collaboration skills and are "data-aware" then work with them to form a team or two to start promoting the data governance framework and the DG and data stewardship activities.

Data champions often find you. If you make it known that you're working on strengthening data, you will likely have people approaching you with sad tales of data gone wrong and problems they need fixed. These are people who recognize that their problems are caused by data, they're living through the problems, and they want to be a part of the solution. What you want to try to avoid is finding someone you don't know what to do with and tell them you're going to turn them into a data person. If they have no passion about the subject, they're probably not going to be effective.

3 Engage and empower them

Once you have identified some potential data governance champions, you need to engage and empower them to take on the role and responsibilities.
