Do you want a mentor based on the community they align themselves with that you feel an affinity to? Do you want a mentor who has industry connections because you value your industry reach? Everything in a mentorship is proprietary to you and your mentor. It is first and foremost - a relationship. Surround yourself with mentors who are people you both align with AND disagree with. Never make assumptions and open your mind to the views of professionals with differing opinions to help you grow your own.

While having a mentor is a great privilege, having a reciprocal commitment between you and the mentor is the recipe for exponential growth. The relationship quality between mentor and mentee will determine how deep the experience transfer involved. You also need to have an open heart to share your true situation and be prepared to receive even the harshest comment with the trust that it was given relevant to your situation and able to receive it without any bias while able to act upon the agreed recommendation.
