A speech should answer important questions that start with 'what is the endgame?'. When writing a speech, the writer/end user intends to get the audience to take an action. Identifying this final action will help you define/understand what rhetorical device(s) is/are most appropriate. Your desired outcome also requires an understanding of your audience. Regardless of your plan and devices used, always commit to passing a message that is actionable, clearly communicated, and transfareable.

How much you use figures of speech will depend on the audience and event. More formal speeches tend to include more figures of repetition, for example. They are more common in high-level political speeches than in business speeches. For example, Winston Churchill used anaphora at the end of one of his famous speeches (“We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans”, etc.). It worked well in this situation (parliamentary speech) but wouldn’t work for a less formal occasion. Other types of figures of speech – such as metaphors – are appropriate in most circumstances. There are many figures of speech to choose from, but most copywriters and speechwriters use maybe 5 to 10 a regularly.

Es gibt eine einfache Frage für gute Reden: Was erwartet mein Publikum? Wenn ich die Frage beantworten kann, dann kann ich eine Rede entwickeln, die das Publikum begeistern wird. Indem sie das Publikum emotional ansprechen. Das geht am besten mit Metaphern, die auf das Publikum zugeschnitten sind. Um sie zu finden, muss ich mein Publikum kennen. Siehe oben :-)
