How do you evaluate your resume writing?

As someone who has worked with 450+ clients in the last 6 years to help them learn how to write a good resume, my magic formula sounds: first of all, pick a job ad where you fulfull at least 60-70% of requirements, and then tailor your resume. Highlight all the conditions from that job ad and copy/paste them into your resume. It's the simplest method ever that helps my clients get the desired job in less than 2 months. Why copy/paste? Because employers want to see that you actually have requirements they are looking for. Put in your resume what is required. Employers will see those words, phrases, skills, knowledge etc. and and will conclude that you are potentially the perfect candidate. That's how you get a job interview :)

Your resumes should be designed with an eye toward being "asked out on a date" (get an interview). You should have a keyword rich basic resume that outlines almost everything (forget your trivial work) designed for jobsites and other mass locations and then a targeted resume focused on the specific role that you are submitting it for. If you are applying through an ATS, the software is pattern recognition--it wants to see the same terms in the resume as in the job description early in the document. Do not make the reader or the software have to think in order to see how you might fit. Make it obvious or you risk your resume being rejected AND IT WILL BE YOUR FAULT, not the system's.

I dont endorse Online Resume writing tools..they can be used just for the Template design. One should see his / her CV as a form of self-expression.,Their Persona, Objective, Career Goals, Educational Credentials, Professional Work Experience, Career Path, Roles played, Key Deliverables, Skills, Strengths, Achievements and Testimonials. Resume should not look like a mere job seeker but a valuable resource.. Should highlight in details Project Types, Tasks Handled and special individual contributions.. Should come across as flexible, multi-tasking and Team-player..

I disagree with using online tools like Jobscan, because they fool candidates into thinking their resumes are "ATS Ready". Since Resumes are typically only screened out by screening questions and the human eye, it's better for someone to focus on writing their resume for someone to read, using their accomplishments and skills related to the position they are applying to. This is much more effective than relying on automated tools that can fool you into thinking you can just apply to positions and get a job because your resume hits the right percentage.

My opinion is that you should limit your use of people to those who understand what it is you do in order to avoid nonsense suggestions that won't result in more interviews but "dumbing down" your resume. This limits the field to knowledgeable friends and family, former colleagues (I've known too many instances of current colleagues sabotaging someone to get their job), professionals in your field, recruiters, resume writers, and career coaches who will critique it, even if you have to pay for the service.

Reach out to friends, family members, or colleagues and ask them to review your resume. Constructive criticism from others can provide valuable insights you might have missed.

Just as there is A/B testing with marketing, social media ads, software, etc., you should consider creating more than one resume to see if one performs better than the other(s). It's also worth the extra time to tailor a basic resume to a specific job opening if you are genuinely interested.

A resume is about "less is more". Say all of the most important things about your background In the fewest words possible. No bullet point should ever be more than 2 lines long. If your bullet point gets too long you begin to lose the reader. It's OK to have one bullet point that describes your overall responsibilities but every bullet point thereafter should be about achievements. The more you can quantify your achievements the stronger your resume becomes.

Writing a resume is an ongoing process. Continuously update and refine your resume as you gain new experiences and skills. Stay open to feedback and be willing to make adjustments to ensure your resume remains a powerful marketing tool throughout your career journey.

I like all the points that are being made about resumes. A resume is your "marketing document". What separates you from your competitors? How do you stand out? Why would a hiring manager want to choose YOU? Cite examples of what you did that made a difference. I like to call these "case stories". They will be memorable and sticky in the brain. Otherwise, too many resumes tend to the past tenses of job descriptions... boring. What makes you unique and special? Use action verbs. Revising your resume will also help you get promoted internally or get a new job externally. It's the Rule of 80/20: 80% prep, 20% execution.

It is not uncommon to have multiple versions of your resume created based on the opportunity you are applying for, especially in Higher Ed settings. It should be noted that when applying, you should pay attention to the qualifications listed and the application instructions if provided. Tailor your application materials to what is asked for in the instructions when applicable. Make sure you address how you meet the qualifications. For example, if you have the skill sets listed in the qualifications or requirements, make those visible in your resume.
