In any project, it's important to assess your goals. One method is through objectives key results (OKR) for goal setting, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess monitor performance with metrics. This will help drive to have a plan in place. The plan needs to address the 5 Ws (why, what, who, where, when) in any point in time. This will help document and align the process with stakeholders as you work make progress.

My first step is to understand what the current task is or proposed task will be. My source is those involved in the process of the work. If I receive vague descriptions, I go back for details. If I see holes, I ask how to connect the parts. If I see potential duplication, I ask how the left/right decision is made. Without having an adequate understanding, my explanation may create problems. Clarity is my focus. I must comprehend before I can share the ideas. There is a famous quote, “If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.”

Get real people to test your data visualization. They'll help you spot confusing bits (charts, labels) and make sure it's engaging. Find a mix of testers and ask simple questions about how clear it is. Their feedback is pure gold for making your visualization a winner!

Sometimes keeping things simple results in false conclusions, whereas more details highlight the need for more nuanced analysis.
