How do you evaluate and compare different SCADA vendors and service providers?

La principal diferencia entre una solución DCS y una SCADA es que en el DCS la herramienta que programa a sus controladores (los PLCs del DCS) y la parte HMI es un solo software único con una sola base de datos que contiene todos los tags. The logic flow interacts with the process as an algorithm rather than as set of conditional directives. In some cases, this is done with multiple products, stitched together, but working in harmony to provide this functionality to the end user.

The SCADA system is important for speed , reliability ,stability and security of any distributed system where control is necessary ( whether automated or operator control). Also for that you should have reliable and uninterrupted data which might be communicated through remote terminal units or through other Control centres through ICCP.

The definition of SCADA has changed over the years. From being a supervisory controls portal, to being a concentrator for multiple data collection hubs, to an overall master dashboard for a distributed set of install bases and remote data collection points. It is used interchangeably for an over-arching control dashboard for a distributed install base such as a collection of Factories or Manufacturing sites and a Human Machine Interface at the Factory/Site level that allows operations to know and control the plant floor and process. It is the hub that lets the operations group know what is going on in their area of care/responsibility and ensure measures to control it or be alerted to exception events that they need to urgently address.

For instance SCADA is a powerful tool that is the backbone of power system of any country. The transmission network or the energy system operator get an overview of the state of power system donning across the length and breadth of the country through SCADA. It collects and displays important system events, system status etc for the operator to make and informed decision and also is capable of controlling remote equipments. These days the SCADA is much more than what the acronym stands for. The software and technology capability helps operator to use real time data to study the system using simulations, AI and ML is used to predict events, auto operation sequences can be charted to avoid operator errors etc.

This question i can't count how many SCADA vendors we have dealt with. But will start from the pain points. 1. Software bugs Some SCADA vendors don't seem to embrace continuous improvement and resolve these issues. E.g currently I have a scada app where the historian app stops running intermittently. OEM still looking for solutions 2. Another some condition monitoring function crushes the windows etc. 2. Inadequate training to end user engineers 3. Lack of support when you need it. So then evaluating a SCADA vendor, don't look at the tech, Ai they offer. Check their previous works, do your due diligence with other process plants. Ensure both the hardware and software being used are tried and tested. Check their training offering & support

In addition, SCADA systems provides data analysis by collect and store large amounts of data, which can be used to identify trends, optimize processes, and make informed decisions about future investments and upgrades.

Vendor Evaluation:- Compatibility - Ensure the SCADA system aligns with existing infrastructure. A power plant prioritised vendors compatible with their legacy systems. Customisation -Look for flexibility in system customisation. A factory found a vendor who tailored the interface to their specific processes. Training and Certification:- Accreditation- Seek courses accredited by recognised industry bodies. A technician enhanced his career with an internationally recognised certification. Relevance- Choose courses relevant to current industry standards and technologies. An engineer attended a course focusing on the latest IoT integration in SCADA.

SCADA has diversified applications and needs application-specific training. However for general training, consider these points: 1. Research reputable providers and associations. 2. Ensure course content matches your level and goals. 3. Check instructor expertise and industry alignment. 4. Opt for hands-on practice and real-world projects. 5. Seek certifications recognized in the field. 6. Consider networking opportunities and support. 7. Compare costs, but prioritize quality education. 8. Utilize demos or trials to assess course fit. 9. Training is important to keep up with ever changing technologies but I think it is also important to understand your requirements. Do you require vendor specific training, systems integration, or general non-vendor specific training, etc.? Can you apply this training immediately to your day to day work scope or is the training more for expanding the breadth of your knowledge? Vendor specific training on various OT devices you are exposed to will help solidify your understanding of those devices and improve your efficiency in performing various tasks. Vendor specific training will also help reduce the rework and your exposure to risks by closing gaps within your SCADA systems. Choose wisely as time & money commitments are equally important!

Best training would be a hands-on experience at any big SCADA or DCS vendor. If you are at customer side, try to get an on-job training at the vendor facility. Solutions can be different, but the basics are the same, if you have a chance, continue with a different vendor system.
