1 Define your scope and contract

Before you start working with a client, you need to establish a clear and mutual agreement on the scope, objectives, expectations, roles, responsibilities, boundaries, fees, and confidentiality of your coaching relationship. This will help you avoid misunderstandings, conflicts, and ethical dilemmas later on. You should also review and update your contract regularly, as the coaching needs and context may change over time.

2 Follow ethical and professional standards

Supervision provides a space and mechanism to proactively explore ethical dilemmas that might arise within your coaching practice. It is also a space for reflection on efficacy, impact and self care, so that the coach remains calibrated , in service of their clients and fit to practice.

One of the most important factors for a successful executive coaching relationship is trust and rapport. You should build trust and rapport with your client, by being authentic, respectful, empathetic, supportive, and challenging. You should also communicate clearly, openly, and honestly, and listen actively and attentively. You should also respect your client's autonomy, agency, and diversity, and avoid imposing your own agenda, values, or solutions.

The common thread with the most effective teams is the energy level generated by their leaders. That energy is a reflection of a capability and capacity to generate work – and therefore, results. 6 Maintain your well-being and balance

Finally, as an executive coach, you should also take care of your own well-being and balance. You should manage your stress, emotions, energy, and workload, and avoid burnout, compassion fatigue, or overcommitment. You should also set healthy boundaries and limits, and practice self-care and self-compassion. You should also seek support and guidance from your peers, mentors, supervisors, or other professionals, when needed.

One thing I find helpful is to dedicate half an hour before and after formal coaching. Never underestimate how much it helps you and the client, if you enter the room fully present and holding firmly to your process and coaching beliefs. Afterwards you can make sure you take time to reflect on all the nuances and patterns you didn't have headspace to consciously reflect on in the moment and do any documentation you need to. Try it both ways if you like, but I'm confident you'll see a big difference.

Continuously seek feedback: Your clients and peers will be able to tell you whether your coaching practice is meeting high enough standards. Evaluating each client engagement and having regular peer to peer sessions regarding quality and standards are two ways to do this.

It's also helpful to make sure the results are tangible. If there are clear goals from the outset about what's to be achieved, then you actually have a measurable target, and I agree, continual feedback is the means you can make suare that's happening.
