How do you ensure adequate fire exits, signage, and lighting for a construction site?

The biggest issue for Fire Safety Management on construction sites, particularly in the UK, is that it's left to the site manager to determine whats needed. Whilst many site managers are indeed competent and capable in this respect, the issue remains that they are also restricted in their time and often have many other more pressing priorities to be dealing with. Budget constraints can also come into play. The use of an independently prepared Fire Safety Plan detailing the requirements for each site, can therefore often be of far more benefit, helping to ensure that the site’s requirements are properly catered for. This should of course also be reviewed and revised on a regular basis to ensure that it remains valid and in place.

It is essential for employers and site managers to take proactive measures to identify, establish, and maintain appropriate fire exit routes throughout the premises. Use a system that makes these visible and easy to find, and assign a qualified person to perform the monthly inspections. Things tend to get damaged and moved more often in construction than in a permanent building.

We just don't seem to do this very often in construction, and I have to say that sometimes I find it very difficult to find the exit on a project under construction. Particularly when the construction "exit" is different from the building's permanent exit (i.e. the permanent stairs are not yet accessible). Obviously this isn't an issue the entire time the building is under construction because there aren't any walls to obscure your exit, but when the drywall starts going up, it can be a little challenging to find the exit.

An example i've seen is by replacing old glow in the dark Exit signs by Led light Exit signs. Conduct also testing by unplugging the exit light and test its lights and how long it will work when the power is off

This is a bit misleading and there seems to be a mingling of standards for workers in permanent in-place structures and buildings under construction. They are not the same thing and I don’t think I have ever seen anything like the system described above on a construction site. It is important to provide and maintain temporary lighting throughout a building that is under construction, but it also really depends on the stage the building is in.

It is imperative that emergency lighting be independent of the main electrical system. In the event of a power outage, regular lighting may fail, leaving occupants in the dark. Emergency lighting, on the other hand, is powered by a backup battery or generator that can provide illumination for at least 90 minutes. This ensures that occupants have enough time to safely evacuate the building before the lights go out. Having reliable emergency lighting in place can make all the difference in a life-threatening situation. It provides a sense of security and allows occupants to navigate their way out of the building efficiently.

Worker safety should always be applied across the board. As part of this commitment, you should prioritize fire awareness training. This will equip everyone with the knowledge and skills to navigate a fire emergency effectively. Regular fire drills, led by trained personnel, will ensure familiarity with evacuation routes and assembly points. It is important to delve into proper fire extinguisher use, alarms and other firefighting equipment operation, and the crucial practice of reporting fire hazards. Investing in this training fosters a culture of safety and preparedness on every project site.

This tends to be overlooked on many projects. Specifically, how will workers be alerted to evacuate in the case of a fire or other emergency. Do not overlook this. Are you using an air horn? Does anyone know where it is? Will people inside actually be able to hear it? Although not common, I am seeing the availability of more temporary fire alarm systems built specifically for construction. I think these are a good investment.

Training workers on fire exit procedures involves familiarizing them with evacuation routes, assembly points, and emergency protocols. It is important for all employees to be aware of the quickest and safest way to exit the building during a fire. By reviewing evacuation routes and assembly points regularly, you can ensure that workers are prepared for any emergency situation. In addition to knowing how to exit the building safely, employees should also be trained on how to use fire extinguishers, alarms, and other fire-fighting equipment.

Construction projects can change daily and a lack of permanent signage can make it difficult to know where the exit is on floors that are under construction. Have an exit plan and communicate it to all the trades on the site. Make sure people have a means of communication and a number to call if they see a fire in a building under construction, or if they cannot get out. This is critical and often overlooked. For example, a lone worker in a floor under construction may know to call 911 if a fire breaks out, but that doesn’t communicate the emergency to anyone else on the site and in the building. Have a plan for how that communication is going to occur.

Updating your fire exit plan involves reviewing the layout of your construction site and identifying any new potential hazards or obstacles that could impede the evacuation process. This could include changes in the structure of the building, new equipment or materials on site, or any alterations that may have been made to the original plan. By staying vigilant and regularly assessing the site, you can ensure that your fire exit plan remains effective and up-to-date. It is also important to communicate any updates to your workers and subcontractors to ensure that everyone is aware of the changes and understands their role in the evacuation process.

The use of a “Hot Work” permit system on a job site can greatly reduce the risk of fires on a construction project. Require all trades to complete a permit form that includes a checklist of all the things they need to inspect and have in place prior to performing any work that creates heat, flame, smoke, or sparks. Require them to get the approval of the site management team to ensure they know the work is being done, and require them to post a fire watch for at least 30 minutes after the hot work is completed to ensure all potential ignition sources are made safe.

Ensure you have the proper fire extinguishers on site and employee s trained in its use in the event of fire to initiate. Quick knockdown of the fire so it does not spread A- wood paper- water tank is adequate B- petroleum fuels- ABC extenguier should be used or a foam exstinguisher C- electrical fire- ABC is also an adequate extinguisher to use * at no time use water on a petroleum based fire

I would bring in a parking lot striping and signage company that is well versed in ADA and OSHA codes and let them do what they do best, and if I was pleased with their work I would contract them to come out every 2yrs to keep my company up to par with OSHA and ADA policies.
