How do you engage your audience throughout a public speech?

My practice is to interview audience members prior to the talk and interweave the insights I gleaned into my talk. I also greet people as they're on the way in and introduce myself. I'll reference them by name throughout the talk.

Try to start with a strong opening; something like a compelling relevant quote, an intriguing fact, a story, or a thought-provoking question. This captures your audience's attention from the outset and frames your speech. Make sure you know your audience so that you can deliver content that is interesting to them. Then use storytelling throughout your speech. This can evoke emotions, which are useful getting the audience compelled and make complex ideas more understandable. You can also ask the audience questions to get them involved, depending on the environment.

You have to let your audience know what is in your speech that is about THEM. Not what you want to say, but what they want to hear. By asking yourself what you think your audience wants to hear, you are well on your way to being a more engaging speaker. A good way to do this is through the formula "By doing X you will get Y" at the top of your speech. It is a great hook for engagement right away.

Establish a strong connection from the start, with a compelling story, or relevant anecdote that piques their curiosity. Throughout the speech, maintain eye contact, using gestures and facial expressions to convey enthusiasm. Incorporate rhetorical questions, polls, to encourage participation. Vary your delivery pace, tone, and volume to add dynamism and prevent monotony. Tailor your content to resonate with the interests and needs of your specific audience, showing empathy and understanding of their experiences. Finally, conclude with a memorable takeaway or call to action that inspires reflection or prompts further discussion, leaving your audience feeling informed and inspired.

Understanding your audience is not just important, it's a game-changer. By researching their demographics, interests, and preferences, you can craft a speech that truly resonates with them. For instance, if you're addressing a group of students, incorporating pop culture references or examples from their daily lives can help establish a connection.

Whenever you are on a stage think that you are a queen or king. Own the stage. For that starting should be catchy so that people listen to you till the end. Ask questions, share relatable lines, Punch lines, quotes, any anecdote, statistic according to the speech. Start so confidently with any of these so that people will love to listen to you every time. Opportunity knocks at once so give your best. Don't forget as you start strongly end with confidence as well.

By incorporating relevant, relatable stories, you capture the attention of even the most disinterested listener. I remember whenever I used to share something normally people never used to pay heed to it. In life anything you do, share, or work you need ingredients to add. Stories add those ingredients that everyone likes. Stories can inspire, motivate, encourage people to take actions. So, be vulnerable and share your story to the world. It makes relationship better; we can have better networks and can connect. Therefore, choose stories according to the topic you are going to take. Engaging your audience is a two-way street. Encourage interaction by asking questions, inviting participation, or incorporating interactive elements such as polls or Q&A sessions. This not only keeps the audience actively involved but also creates a dynamic and engaging atmosphere. For instance, you can pause at critical points in your speech to ask for feedback or opinions, fostering a sense of dialogue and connection with the audience

Borrow as much as you can from what you’d do in a 1:1 conversation. Great presentations often feel like conversations. That’s because the speaker acts accordingly – using eye contact, pauses, questions, sometimes even dialogue with some of the audience members. If done well, a short back-and-forth conversation with one audience member can make the audience feel like you’re having that conversation with all of them.

Utilize your speaking space properly! This tip is especially helpful if you are using a wireless mic. Walking to each side of the stage and making eye contact with different audience members during a talk is a great way to draw them in/connect with them far better than you can when you remain behind a podium, or stand in one spot the entire time.
