How do you encourage teamwork?

A team is formed around a common goal or mission, otherwise it is only a group, not a team. This means it is important to articulate specific vision of the Team, clear do’s and some don’ts and expected behaviour. While the leader may have clarity, but if important to discuss this with team members to have shared vision around this.

Good teamwork can often help a business grow by solidifying the ability of each team member to collaborate and cooperate with one another. Strong teams can increase innovation, quality n ultimately, create a company culture that's both supportive and efficient. Timely & Spot Appreciation also results in boosting the employee moral thus encouraging them to work as a team & align themselves towards the values of an organization. Encourage clear, frequent communication- Clear and frequent communication will ensure that all team members are on the same page, leading to more accurate work being completed on a shorter timeline. One of the key things to do is to establish purpose! Every team member should not just know but be 100% emotionally invested in the journey the organisation is undertaking. This is achieved by continuously talking about the vision, how it benefits them and most importantly explain the "Why".

I feel, people are not comfortable being their authentic selves. There is so much of pressure to fit into the “norm”. I think trust has direct linkage to how much you can confide with the respective team member on why something can happen/ cannot happen. And I am sure, when you confide and are truthful - it takes very little time to build trust. Sharing personal stories, being honest about a problems they are having helps a lot.

Trust is based on the common ground we can find we others. When we are in person, this is easier to find. When we work remotely, we need to invest time and see what we have in common, for example preferred methods of communication, interest in lifelong learning, sense of humor, and so on. So the best way is to schedule 1:1 short calls, on a regular basis until we get to know each other.

Building trust is the first and most important step in building teamwork, defining responsibility, and encouraging communication on an ongoing basis.

In my experience, the best way to encourage teamwork is to create a culture that promotes inclusion, safety, respect, anti-bullying, and belonging. If someone feels safe to share ideas, is protected from abuse, discrimination, or retaliation, and will be open to collaborating and being creative. If someone feels that belongs, that the project is also important for her/him, and that his work will be recognized and appreciated, they will go the extra mile to collaborate with the team.

I learned about a term recently called "psychological safety". It was coined by Amy Edmondson and it's defined as "a belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes." If a leader wants to make sure that their people will speak up and share ideas, they need to foster this idea where they know their ideas will be taken into account. As a leader, that means treating each person fairly and actively listening to what they have to say. In my experience, regular one-on-ones are a great time to foster this type of culture. Make them a priority, and if you have to cancel them make sure to set a new date and time to have the meeting with your direct report.

Here are three key actions that can help foster teamwork through diversity and inclusion: 1. Embrace diverse perspectives: Encourage open dialogue, actively listen to different viewpoints, and value unique contributions. 2. Build psychological safety: Create a safe space for team members to express themselves without fear of judgment, fostering trust and collaboration. 3. Celebrate differences: Recognize and celebrate individual and cultural differences, promoting team unity and a sense of belonging. Remember, diversity is a strength, and inclusion unlocks its full potential!

We need to constantly remind the people we work with that despite having the same organizational goals and objectives to achieve, we are still different people in terms of personalities, traditions, perspectives, circumstances, environments, skills, and experience. We should therefore always see our diversity as an opportunity to approach tasks broadly, enhance our learning, foster creativity and innovation; show empathy and tolerance, while still making everyone feel inclusive and valued. This is one pivotal education and skill we need to acquire as leaders and managers of people.

Promoting diversity and inclusion in teams enhances creativity, fosters varied perspectives, and ensures equitable opportunities for all members. This creates a more vibrant and innovative team environment, where every individual is valued and can contribute effectively to achieve shared goals.

Effective strategies for DEI advocacy may include mentoring opportunities, targeted marketing, talent searches and community partnerships, and cultural and educational events. However, the most efficient way to advocate for diversity and inclusion is through action. If DEI is important to an organization, those most invested in that organization's success should be its most outspoken champions. Leaders should be intimately involved in advocacy, investing in DEI educational opportunities for the entire team, and communicating both "wins" and challenges on a regular basis. Sharing the journey with stakeholders and committing to transparency will also help organizations build credibility and advance DEI objectives.

In addition to hiring practices and training programs, fostering diversity and inclusion can be further enhanced by creating affinity groups or employee resource networks. These groups provide a platform for team members to connect based on shared interests, backgrounds, or experiences. These networks often become valuable sources of support, mentorship, and cross-functional collaboration, strengthening the sense of inclusion and belonging within the team.

When encouraging collaboration, consider implementing regular cross-functional projects that require team members from different departments to work together. Assigning these "fusion teams" to tackle specific challenges not only fosters collaboration but also breaks down departmental silos. It encourages the sharing of knowledge, skills, and innovative thinking, leading to better solutions and a more cohesive team environment.

Encourage collaboration by being deliberate about creating opportunities for cross-functional tasks and goals. Speak to the function heads individually and then as a collective about medium and long term goals. From the discussions, there will be function overlaps and this is where collaboration starts. Get necessary team members involved and ensure the group dynamics is one that allows every team member have their opinion heard and considered, regardless of background, status, age, religion.

Encouraging collaboration and cooperation is pivotal for achieving team success. Emphasize the value of working together towards common goals. Foster an environment where team members actively share ideas, knowledge, and resources to achieve the best outcomes. Recognize and celebrate collaborative efforts, inspiring a culture of teamwork. In one notable instance during my tenure as a team leader, we faced a complex project that required diverse expertise. By promoting collaboration and cooperation, we harnessed the collective strengths of our team, leading to innovative solutions and project success. By emphasizing these principles, you can build a cohesive and high-performing team that consistently delivers outstanding results.

I'd show them 2 photos, #1 their normal pay check, #2 a pay check with all zeros along with a simple sentence pointing to #1 saying you follow orders and contribute to the team, U get this. Then pointing to the zero check saying if you don't, then you get this. To me, the message is simple, do what we pay you to do or "get gone".

This is now more challenging due to remote, hybrid working, some on site, some online. It is quite important to define clearly how teams can collaborate, what is expected rather than depend on individual ways of working and their own definition of team collaboration.

Feedback is incredibly critical. But, feedback should never be limited to only formal feedback sessions. It is the responsibility of leaders to create an environment and culture where you can give candid feedback anytime. "Clear is kind." Creating a culture of candor improves quality of work, training, and productivity. When people can speak with candor, it lowers the interpersonal risk, increasing the psychological safety of the environment.

Providing feedback and support is crucial for individual and team growth. Regularly offer constructive feedback to help team members improve their skills and performance. Additionally, ensure they have the resources and assistance they need to excel in their roles. In my experience as a team leader, I've seen that when team members receive guidance and support, their confidence grows, leading to increased productivity and a stronger sense of belonging. This proactive approach to feedback and support fosters a positive and collaborative team dynamic, ultimately contributing to overall success.

Providing feedback and support for employee relations is a critical aspect of managing a productive and harmonious workplace. When giving feedback, provide concrete examples to illustrate your points. Address issues or provide praise promptly rather than waiting for a performance review. Focus on behavior and actions, not personality. Offer solutions or suggestions for improvement. Frame feedback in a respectful and non-confrontational manner, maintaining a tone that encourages open communication.

Constructive feedback creates an open space where all involved feel free to talk about the situation without fear of blame or hurt. Focusing on the goal and how to reach it encourages collaboration and builds stronger team relationships and opportunities to learn and collaborate . Timely feedback keeps the team on track and provides opportunities to the manager to identify the support and resources the team may need . It goes a long way to motivate the team and keep them engaged!

Offering feedback and support is essential for both individual and team development. Provide regular constructive feedback to help team members enhance their skills and performance. Also, ensure they have the necessary resources and assistance to excel in their roles. In my role as a team leader, I've observed that when team members receive guidance and support, their confidence and productivity rise, fostering a stronger sense of belonging. Plus, leaders can institute a practice of regular "open door" sessions or feedback forums. During these sessions, team members are encouraged to provide constructive feedback directly to leadership. This approach not only demonstrates openness and a willingness to improve but also empowers team members to actively participate in shaping the team's culture and processes. It fosters a sense of ownership and engagement, which are vital for building a strong and effective team.

Leader should be a knowledegable per who can guide the team during troubled times. He should be a reliable person whom the team members can count-on during their hard times.

If we expect our teams to do something, it is important to behave in the expected way/lead by example to avoid double standards which never works well and can against the effective team collaboration.

Demonstrating your intention to work collaboratively with your colleagues will help to inspire & encourage your team to do the same. If you're looking for the perfect person to drive collaboration & facilitate teamwork across your team, then you might be that perfect person! Lean on your colleagues for advice, ask for their input & opinions, encourage idea-sharing, utilise their skills & expertise and capitalise on the full range of resources that they can provide. There is strength in synergy & unity.

This concept is as old as the most archaic form of communication. Lead by example... What is that really? Does that mean the CEO of Waste Management should heave garbage cans each Wednesday? Obviously not! What it means is to know the why you task others to do things and behave accordingly. i.e.-Do not demand total honesty from your selling process and then bait and switch your personal life. Your team will see it and form their opinion accordingly. And bluntly, they truly won't be wrong.

Social exchange (SE) is essential for people to feel engaged in their work. Leaders need to ensure their team has a compelling reason to work fully. A job that motivates individuals gives them a sense of purpose and autonomy and allows them to make an impact. It should also involve specific and complex goals that challenge them to perform at their best. Setting up a job in this way makes it a meaningful experience for the individual and leads to better work commitment. Feedback is crucial for individuals to adjust their efforts and perform well. Challenging and meaningful work leads to better effort. This meaningful SE drives engagement and leads to a more motivated and productive team.

Team Members or the team that you are managing or leading, will only have a great impact and positive outcome, when they know that they are being heard and they can voice their thoughts, ideas, opinions and Strategies to get a task done. If an Idea comes to the table by a team member, and if it's great and executed by all collectively, this can be one of the best team, because everyone would be working to make things better and this team would be working on self- encouragement.

ONE ball can unite. Sports, family get togethers, emotions unite and build lifetime connections. Football or cricket, we win because of different skills, bowling, spin or fast pace, batting - the order, we all come with different strengths. When team members realise the natural strengths they possess, they start respecting the contributions by different teams, individuals or departments. Navjyoti India Foundation not only had monthly sports but also cooking during festivals. Cooking, serving and organizing it with love are different skill sets. We did it easily. Happy teamwork. It’s important to remember, that Leadership is about being responsible for the environment and supporting those on your team, so they can perform at their best to solve problems. Having the solution and telling them what to do, doesn’t do anything for “teamwork”. I’ve found that when you have a problem to solve, ask your team how we should solve it. This action, literally creates engagement. Have each member provide their thoughts and solutions. LEAD them through the process. Use your own knowledge to guide your team by asking curious questions to provoke their thoughts in contributing to solving the problem. LEAD and SUPPORT them during their learning process. Watch them grow together, and continuously check in, if support is needed.

Encouraging teamwork goes beyond slogans & team-building exercises. It requires a deeper commitment to fostering a collaborative environment e.g. setting clear team goals/ expectations is vital. When each member understands their role & team's mission, they work more cohesively. Recognizing/rewarding collaborative efforts is crucial. We implemented a recognition system where teams that achieved exceptional results received special acknowledgment which incentivized collaboration. Creating a culture of open communication where team can freely share ideas& concerns is essential. It's about making teamwork a part of the organizational DNA not just a one-time activity. These efforts create a genuine culture of teamwork that drives success.
