When people are more concerned about the risk and its implications than they are motivated by the potential reward, learning and innovation is stifled. As leaders we need to show our teams that failure is an opportunity to learn, try again, and do better. Failure is not fatal.

Stretch assignments and collaboration with others are two essential ways that we can help our teams to grow. A stretch assignment should never be so challenging that it is doomed to bear certain failure, but it should contain elements that make the person feel a little uncomfortable at times. That discomfort is how we learn and grow. Collaborating with other team members, cross functional partners, and other areas of the organization is also a wonderful way to encourage learning and gain new insights, perspectives and skills. Lastly I would encourage supporting teammates when they come to us with new initiatives or ideas. Sometimes those closest to the tasks at hand have great insights, which can be a learning opportunity for everyone.

Finally, one of the most effective ways to encourage learning and collaboration is to lead by example. As a leader, you have a significant influence on the behavior and attitude of your peers and followers. By demonstrating your own commitment to learning and collaboration, you can inspire and motivate your peers and followers to follow suit. Build connections to foster trust: As we encourage learning, we as leaders need to assure that we enhance our connections with those we lead and impact. Aspirations to be a continuous learner will bring about a synergy within an organization if team members and leaders feel connected. As this connection builds we can enhance the sense of trust amongst each other to have candid conversations as a means to grow and learn.
