One thing that has really helped me in my business is setting customer expectations from the beginning. We like to tell our customers that time-to-time we will come ask for their honest feedback, and will appreciate their review, as it helps us serve them better. That way, they are not surprised when you finally ask for feedback. Another thing to also mention is the importance of seeking more detail. Sometimes a customer leaves breadcrumbs that should trigger our curiousity to want to find out more. For example, a customer saying the support is the best they've had. Why not ask more details so you understand why they've said so? Of course you can't always ask all customers to give more information, but more information is beneficial.

Make sure customers are aware of these incentives to increase participation. This not only acknowledges their time and effort but also encourages a positive interaction with your brand.

I disagree with incentivizing or rewarding reviews. I'll offer an alternative way to think about rewarding customers - And that is by relentlessly building value for them at every turn. What's in it for them to leave an honest review? Acknowledgement and change is the answer. I think we've all experienced the feeling that your feedback goes nowhere or stops at the person that you're giving it to. Most companies don't follow up and most don't schedule time to further understand feedback. Those that do end up building long lasting relationships with customers that provide value well beyond a quick incentive or reward.

Often times the best reward is the personal touch. I once (after getting agreement) was able to run a promotion for feedback and 5 selected responses would have the opportunity to elaborate on their submission with a member of the executive team including the CEO. Just being given the potential opportunity to maybe complain to a top person boosted responses. After all rewards and incentives while typically considered monetary don't necessarily need to be, and depending on your desired result may not be the correct choice.

Show Appreciation and Recognition ???? Express gratitude for customers who take the time to leave reviews. Respond promptly with a thank-you message, acknowledging their contribution. Consider featuring standout reviews on your website or social media platforms. Public recognition not only validates their input but also encourages others to share their experiences.

Respond and Act on Feedback ???? Demonstrate the value you place on customer input by responding to reviews, both positive and negative. Acknowledge feedback, address concerns, and show a commitment to improvement. When customers see their opinions being heard and acted upon, it fosters trust and encourages a culture of open communication.

Acting is the critical part here, the moment you stop (or slow down too much) incorporating what you have learned from the feedback you make this whole process 2X+ harder the next time you seek constructive feedback. If you were automated or lack luster in your responses previously you can help this process over time by sharing to your client base collectively what you gained from the feedback provided last quarter or year and how you are excited for them to help further your continued growth.

Customers will only continue to spend the time to give feedback if they know you care and are listening. If you show as super defensive about feedback, or even delete negative feedback in social media, customers will take notice. They won't waste their time anymore. They will stop buying from you and likely tell their friends too.
