How do you be an effective mentor for your junior colleagues?

Third, I aim to lead by example, demonstrating professionalism and a commitment to continuous learning. Finally, I create a supportive environment where they feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes. This very intimate exchange of information, ideas, and wisdom means a 'good fit' is important for both parties. Include how cancellations and reschedules will be handled as well. I often put the burden of coordinating rescheduling on the person cancelling and establish a max number of cancellations (by either party) before the reconsidering if the timing is right to continue the relationship

Letting your mentee know what your own experiences were like when you were in their shoes is a great way to build rapport and connect. Employees often look at someone a few steps ahead of them for a glimpse into where they might be headed. Share your advice and shortcuts that you learned along the way while still giving them room to pave their own path.

One major difference in a mentor and a coach is the amount of telling what to do. As a mentor, there is an expectation that you have answers to what works and what doesn't and can speed up the learning process. This sharing of wisdom through experience doesn't negate the ability of the mentee to evaluate and choose which options work for them now or can be held for future situations. Oftentimes the mentor's availability makes the telling the appropriate method. Getting a coach is a different but important method of mentee development.

Acknowledging the small victories before jumping into the next task can make such a memorable impact on your mentee. Have they acquired a new skill they can proudly showcase, even beyond the workplace? Take a moment to appreciate and recognize it (and make it a habit to do so regularly). It's so easy to overlook what significant progress has been made in the short term before rushing into the next step.

Develop a dedicated mentorship program per level including the junior one where the mentors can apply to support juniors and develop them and the mentees can apply as well as part of this program and take the most of it. Make sure there is a dedicated team that can help scheduling the sessions based on the mentees interest session with a specific mentor. And follow up the mentees development after a period of time, making sure the mentee needs has been met and what can be improved within the mentorship program.
