How do you drive HR innovation?

HR as it can provide a wealth of knowledge. The key here is for the organisation to have clearly defined vision, mission and values without this the audit will be meaningless. Also it is important to get buy in from the CEO and other areas of the business so it can be a collaborative approach.

Simply put be just realistic and truthful in approach while dealing with the employment cycle of rejection, hiring,firing or retiring Need to take full ownership of talent acquisition ( beyond induction) and support employees for performing at their best by collaborating,providing real time feedbacks and hand holding for development and skill enhancement. Create a conducive, participative atmosphere and keep gauging the cultural pulse by way of feedbacks or structured surveys.. Go beyond just cultural engagements; be the function which is part of network and engaged in bigger picture vision and strategic goals.Be the Business partners in true sense to foster a culture of process and behavioural excellence..

Based on my experience, there is another essential component in assessing the current status: cross-functional collaboration involves teams from different departments working together to achieve common goals. Beyond aligning HR strategy with company goals, engaging with other departments is pivotal. I think true collaboration transcends just staying updated with technology and market trends. It demands active listening, proactive monitoring, and soliciting detailed feedback. Such feedback should be approached peer-to-peer. Given HR's holistic role, it must tailor its support to the unique needs of individual departments, using the power of tailormade innovations.

Invest in a HR Maturity Assessment. Deep dive into whether you are meeting compliance requirements, what are your risks and what are your opportunities. Organisations like mine that provide this type of service, will provide a full list of recommendations to help you prioritise your road map of HR activities that need to lift your maturity. It is hard for businesses to do this audit on their own, as they are generally caught up in day to day operations. Having someone external come in to do this assessment will ensure it is unbiased and will help you to really understand your gaps to tackle!

Defining HR innovation involves leveraging new technologies, strategies, and approaches to enhance the overall effectiveness of the HR function. HR innovation should align with organisation's overall business goals and objectives to provide meaningful contributions else it won't give justice. The challenge is to create an environment where employees feel encouraged to share their ideas and experiment with new HR practices. Once that is done, you can go ahead with personalised development plans or continuous feedback mechanisms or the other problem areas that needs to be addressed to promote ongoing employee growth and development. SMART framework should be up-to-date with the latest HR technologies and should leverage data.

It is essential for these to be clear, realistic and intrinsically aligned to the strategic direction of the organisation, otherwise this will not work.

To define these goals effectively, begin by identifying the key HR challenges or needs that innovation can address. These could span across talent acquisition, development, engagement, retention, or any other HR domain. Your goals should reflect these pressing needs and outline the expected outcomes and benefits of HR innovation.

Openness for everyone is the key here. For this to work you must have a culture of trust and that people will be listened to whatever their opinion.

For every ideation theme, their has to be internal branding and marketing. Ideation box, groups, champions, leads all work and participate together. Making sure that the people driving are supported by the leaders, many time the ideas fail because of lack of support. Communicate dashboards on number of ideas and the stages of their progress, is very important for all to know. Employee KRAs should have one KRA that is Innovation - process/ people/ Organisation, this makes Innovation as a part of culture.

Crowdsourcing has been a game-changer in my HR innovation journey. Open forums where employees can pitch ideas create an inclusive innovation culture. Design Thinking workshops are immensely effective. They put the employee at the center, ensuring solutions are empathetic and user-centric. When sifting through ideas, balance them between immediate organizational needs and long-term strategic value.

Techniques like brainstorming, mind mapping, and design thinking can stimulate creativity. Ideation workshops and crowdsourcing can tap into the collective intelligence of your organization. Seek inspiration not only from within but also from external sources. Actively solicit input from employees and customers. Once you've amassed a pool of ideas, you have to sift through and prioritize them. Criteria such as feasibility, desirability, viability, and scalability are valuable guides. Which ideas align with your organization's goals and resources? Which have the potential to deliver the most significant impact?

Generating innovative HR solutions starts with creating a culture of open communication and active participation. This can involve: Brainstorming sessions: Encourage diverse teams to share ideas freely, using tools like mind maps or design thinking frameworks. Crowdsourcing: Leverage employee surveys, suggestion boxes, or online platforms to gather ideas from the entire workforce. External inspiration: Benchmark against industry leaders, attend HR conferences, and explore emerging technologies to spark new thinking.

“Must-Haves” when testing & prototyping: Agile methodology: Embrace an iterative approach that allows for quick experimentation & learning. Break down larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks, & continuously gather feedback to make necessary adjustments along the way. User-centric approach: Prioritize the needs & expectations of your employees. Involve them in the testing & prototyping process to ensure any new ideas or tools truly enhance their capabilities & improve their overall experience within the organization. Open mindedness: Embrace a culture that encourages curiosity & welcomes new ideas. Be open to exploring unconventional approaches that challenge the status quo.

"Fail fast" and never giving up are very important. Unless we try thousand things, we may not know which one would work. Continuing to learn and innovate or pivot with every new experiment allows dreams to come true

Prototyping in HR is a blend of technology and human interaction. In my past initiatives, piloting a new program with a small group before a company-wide rollout proved invaluable. Tools like MVP are crucial, but equally essential are focus groups where users can provide immediate feedback. Testing shouldn't just be about feasibility but also about gauging the emotional resonance of the solution among employees.

Get involved in testing , understand the pitfalls or loopholes , gaps to be able to correct or improve them. It's ok if there is a failure , you will do better the next time knowing what is the pitfall.

There can be such confusion with people that use terms like agile, and people that actually understand agile. It's not about doing everything so fast you fall flat, it's about breaking down the steps into manageable chunks, creating a timeline and including a review strategy to make sure it's actually working out as you go. If you don't do that, then you find out at the end that it's failed and you're back to square one.

Innovation doesn't end at implementation—it evolves. Throughout my career, I've found that regular check-ins post-implementation help in refining and adapting the solution. Remember, scaling isn't just about reaching more employees; it's about deepening the impact. Communication is key here; ensure every stakeholder understands the value and purpose of the innovation. Continuous feedback loops, not only help refine the solution but also foster a culture of shared ownership and collective growth.

Implementing and scaling innovative HR solutions requires a strategic dance of planning, communication, and adaptation. Start by building a roadmap with clear milestones, utilizing project management tools and securing dedicated resources. Communicate the solution's benefits and gather employee buy-in through training, feedback loops, and pilot programs. Embrace agile methodologies, iterating and adapting based on real-time data and user feedback. Leverage technology for automation and scalability, integrating new solutions with existing systems seamlessly. Ultimately, successful implementation and scaling hinge on clear communication, employee engagement, and a continuous feedback loop that fuels further innovation.

Implementation can be one of the more challenging parts of human resources. It's important to remember that this field requires thinking and as a result demands that we listen to the thinking of others. Use stakeholder voices to guide implementation, make adjustments, and calibrations to the idea being implemented as new information and perspectives become available. Being open to ideas ensures not only that the idea scales but that it is accepted and acted out as it becomes the new standard for behavior. Connection is key and implementation and scaling are the true gauge of how connected personnel are with HR efforts. Finally, do not be afraid to admit defeat and try again. Not every idea is a hit all the time.

Ensure all implementations are executed well . Ensure its communicated to everyone so that they are aware of new implementation of system, workflow, policy - all to drive better efficiency and engagement in the organisation.

During implementation, do not forget that consistency is key. Regular check-ins, celebration of every milestone, and breaking big goals into smaller ones.

This must be inclusive for everyone and openness is key which come with listening and trust. Be clear about the purpose and the outcome - be open to change.

Test engagement of the team, make sure the diverse group is family, build bridges among different cultures - and recruit right - innovation will come from your newbies - then make sure the organization is listening to them - probe senior management on that.

Be agile and flexible. Realizing that some ideas might work while some others don’t will keep HR leaders on their toes. Accepting mistakes and quickly addressing them will also help companies in creating the best HR innovations for the better of their employees.

I agree, some good points made, but it's important we don't fall into the trap of seeing HR innovation as the same as NPD/everyday innovation (define, ideate, prototype etc). HR innovation works with that most-mercurial and utterly frustrating of materials... illogical, emotional, people! The best reminder of which is probably Nick Shackleton-Jones' seminal work 'How people learn'. His is an L&D perspective, but it's ALL about changing hearts & minds, and therefore innovation. In Mr.Shackleton-Jones' own words: "We have to put a stop to the ‘conspiracy of convenience’ in which we draw up a list of things we want people to know, put them into a course, and somehow incentivise people to consume it"
