How do you develop as a consultant?

In addition to developing your skills, it’s equally important to broaden your knowledge. Staying up-to-date is critical, and there are several effective ways to do so, including attending conferences, becoming a member of professional associations, and cultivating relationships with fellow professionals in your field.

This below perspective is purely from SAP consulting experience. Developing as a consultant is 1st thing that you should have a great listening skills and assessing the problem statement correct. 2nd is the in-depth knowledge about the tool or standard practices know and also hunger to learn new things for self improvement. Being a consultant is always a key role how you implement or design the system with standard best practices. Lets take example of a SAP Consultant where if standard practices are know in depth the system is implemented with least customisation this helps to less maintenance cost and with the time it is flexible as well.

I'd argue that the first step in becoming a consultant, maybe even a "Step 0.5," is to first clearly state everything you think will be involved in consulting, all your expectations for the job, and throw them all away. An effective consultant meets the needs of the industry or economy, adjusting themselves to plug gaps, not thinking the clients and work will wrap neatly around your wants and dreams. If you are looking to be a consultant, you are looking to meet someone else's needs.

Becoming consultant is not easy or not tough job. It's all hidden in your approach, your goal and your actions. If you are interested & passionate to deliver high quality services and solutions to businesses, then YES you can become a consultant. Prepare yourself to observe the people, businesses, processes and problems around it. Meet as many executives and managers you can to listen to their problems and then identify the best approach to recommend with your analytical skills and your observations with the tool / software / services you are planning to propose. Experience will build when you meet more people, more businesses and trying to decode more processes.

I have realised throughout the years that many people see consulting as a glamorous role, not understanding the amount of dedication and effort that goes into keeping yourself relevant. The consulting environment changes rapidly and you have to keep up with these changes be they industry-specific, technological or legislative to become that trusted advisor to your clients. It takes grit and compassion, and I personally feel that your softer skills play a vital role in presenting or communicating whatever it is that you are consulting on in layman's terms to your client. It is about building relationships and leveraging these relationships to add value to both the client and yourself. A learning mindset is also paramount for success.

The best investments I’ve made are in private membership communities. Peer learning, support, and sounding boards are super supportive to growth as a consultant.

Hopefully, your employer will pair you with a mentor when you join and you get the opportunity to shadow an experienced employee. Be sure to find out what they expect from the relationship and be sure to share what you hope to gain from it also. A fresh pair of eyes often helps an old pair of eyes so both will benefit in the long term.

Seeking feedback and getting mentored helps you gain more knowledge about the area of your consult. Additionally, feedback helps you correct your ways of consulting and imparting various services. Getting a mentor is always good, because a mentor guides you on a path already travelled by them.

Sometimes, a tiny hurdle feels like a huge wall, especially when you're on a solo gig. Our minds sabotage us by making a mountain out of a molehill. I usually take a timeout to diffuse my mental stalemate; usually, something new will crop up. Taking a break and gaining a fresh perspective can indeed help overcome mental hurdles. It's interesting how a moment away for recharge can sometimes unveil solutions or new ideas.

Being a consultant can be a lonely for long stretches of time between client engagement work. Having a support system to keep you up to date on trends and new ways to approach work is critical. At my current firm we do "ride a longs" when we have down time to see how peers and business partners from other areas conduct sales and business development. This is a great way to build or refine skills by observing others and seeing a variety of approaches to conducting business. You can then cherry pick specific actions and learnings and build it into your own repertoire.

A basic level of learning is important to get started as a consultant, but then its probably more important to learn on the job and keep upskilling, to keep up with the developments in the industry. Most clients know their work areas, and hire consultants as 'specialists', to provide additional inputs and insights. There are often challenges in real-life work that are not easy to explain in a book. Hence, a great way to learn is to keep a note of lessons learnt from various projects, and then use them when suitable in other situations (making sure confidentiality aspects are maintained). It also helps to network with other professionals in the same area of work and have open discussions, so that everyone learns together.

LinkedIn learning is a great tool to utilize. Also once you learn, apply, and once you apply showcase your abilities. All three steps (Learn, Apply, and Showcase) is equally important when positioning your self as a consultant.

I cannot say this enough. I will choose hands on all day, every day. Software tools are what's used in the "soft-spoken" world of consulting. Today's software tools evolve faster than the clock itself due to innovation and also the large technical debt some software providers carry. Knowledge and information are also quickly evolving in this AI age and you have to keep up and test them as you go or be found wanting.

The best way to apply what you learn is to teach someone else what you have learned. Applying those skills practically is of course the goal however if you can teach someone else, you can also do it yourself. When learning a new skill, create a proof of concept to experience it. This gives perspective to what others will face themselves. This allows you to understand the position someone else is in at the time you are able to teach them. It helps immensely to retain knowledge for longer.

The world of consulting is exceptionally broad. Today’s companies rely on consultants in nearly every industry, from healthcare to agriculture. Basic skills required The goal of a consulting project isn’t to maintain the status quo. If you’re brought on by a client, you’re there to solve a problem—or prevent a future one. Once you start implementing your proposals, you’ll want to document your actions and keep stakeholders in the loop. This starts with a strong communication strategy. Having a team mentality is important when it comes to client relationships. You may have a preferred way of leading or communicating.

Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze data, and make recommendations. Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey complex ideas clearly. Industry Knowledge: Understanding of the industry they are consulting in and best practices. Problem-Solving: Solve business problems creatively and strategically. Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing business environments. Interpersonal Skills: Building relationships and collaborating. Ethical Behavior: Maintaining high ethical standards and integrity in all interactions. Project Management: Managing projects efficiently to achieve desired outcomes. Continuous Learning and client focus: Willingness to stay updated on industry developments and up skill.

Try out what you have learnt, for classic methods try and blend these into your delivery. Some people can pick up on the methods being used and either guide you through it, or in some rare occasions they may not like being the Guinea pig. So blending your approach, methods and delivery is key. Ie don’t mention to a client today we are going to use x method unless you think it’s appropriate and been asked for.

I am of the opinion that a consultant is one who identifies the problem, and not a "provider" of solutions; which means the first part of consulting is to draw out the customer, understand his/her pain points and unearth the underlying actual problem. Many of us, without allowing the other to complete start a staccato round of solution providing which offends the customer, as he/she does not get the impression of a "considered response". The approach to "providing solutions" is counter productive and alienates the customer - not only in profession, but also in other aspects of life - social, family etc.

I spend a lot of my time on the creation of thought leadership. It’s always interesting to see how people respond to my latest ideas through their comments and questions. In fact, it is these questions that often spark additional thinking on my part — which leads to even more thought leadership. With over 500 published articles in well-known trade magazines, including fast company, , Inc., and psychology today, I can say that the number one thing a consultant can do to hone their offerings is to develop and write articles that present their original ideas (and not just borrow someone else’s) — the process requires you to know your stuff, and, better yet, your readers will let you know if those ideas are worth anything.

Sharing your expertise works best when you know what resonates for your clients and community. Simple, strategic questions can change your conversations and allow you to gain the valuable insight from your client's expertise and perspective. This provides others the opportunity to engage with your work, rather than just consume it, creating the space for the next conversation and business opportunity.

As a consultant I love sharing my knowledge and expertise with my network and local Business Chamber. Not only does it confirm that you are an expert in your area, it also keeps you top of mind as the person to contact for consultancy work in the future.

Sharing your expertise is very important, because, to consult, you need situations and people who need to be consulted. You will never come in contact with them and their problems which you can solve, if they don't know what you consult and what solution you can bring to solve their issues. Hence sharing your knowledge helps people who need learning or solving reach out to you.

I believe you always need to be open to learning no matter how much you already know or think you know there is always more to learn and grow! You should be able to constantly adapt to new challenges and changes. This will help you not just as a consultant, but also as an individual.

The consulting industry is currently grappling with its own set of challenges, which means that you don't need to actively seek them out; they are already making their presence known. The rapidly evolving ecosystem that envelops us all compels everyone to explore new technologies and tools. Integrating these innovations into our value proposition has become imperative. It's essential to discover how you can contribute your unique strengths to a value chain that is transitioning from integrated solution providers to specialized modular experts.

Think outside of box, get away from comfort zone, look for challenging roles proactively, push forward always and make yourself motivated irrespective of the circumstances

I try to keep track of everything I learn from a project. A learning journal you could say. It prevents me from dwelling on what didn't go as planned. Instead, I want to focus on what I learned and how this can add value to future projects. I rather spend my energy on moving forward.

Always accept an assignment if the price is right. You can figure out how to do it later, even if you have no clue at the time. To progress your knowledge, you have to be a cowboy sometimes.

One other crucial competence of a consultant is to facilitate change, as many clients may KNOW the solution -due to widespread access to information and knowledge sharing- but does not know HOW or cannot make the change happen. Consultants need to be familiar with different styles of change facilitation such as coaching and mentoring.

Take care of your health. Consulting is a pressure-packed, highly analytical profession that requires the mind to be in tiptop condition, always. By eating the right diet, having ample exercise, and subscribing to good sleeping habits, a consultant is able to maintain a sharp intellect. And with a sharp intellect, you can learn new, complex frameworks and knowledge to strengthen your consulting profession. We owe it to our clients to be at our best physical and mental condition for us to help them grow their enterprises.

The most important step in my experience has been working on self-awareness. That is the crucial first step to knowing your strengths, weaknesses and getting a step closer to unveiling your blindspots. Next is consciously and purposefully working on adjusting your mindset so as to perceive every communication, interaction, situation and (especially) failure as a learning opportunity - that's what lifelong learning actually means. Not just learning in structured ways, but in every way possible because lessons are found in the most unexpected places. And then keep repeating as consistency is crucial. The mote you build mastery in an area the more passionate you become. It's a circle (and not a vicious one).

Its is very important for consultant to evolve and grow with changing times. Every industry and discipline, where a consultant specializes or consults, is evolving and old ways change to new ways. Hence, with new ways come new issues, which a consultant should know how to solve.
