The best approach would be to use a defense in depth strategy. For this type of threat this could be network monitoring, endpoint baselines, and a SIEM. Another method to detect could be using file integrity checking mechanisms. Since these systems can be configured to send a 'trip' notice when files are installed or changed this would help to detect suspicious files earlier in the attack

2 How to detect obfuscated malware?

Detecting obfuscated malware is not always easy, but there are some indicators and clues that can help you identify suspicious files and code. For instance, you may observe high entropy, which is a measure of randomness or disorder in data. This could indicate that the data is encrypted, compressed, or packed - all common obfuscation methods. Additionally, the file size or format may be unusually large or small, or have a different format than expected - potentially masking executable code or hidden data. Suspicious strings or metadata can also be used to hide malicious commands, payloads, or configuration data. Tools like strings, hexdump, or binwalk can be used to examine the contents of a file and look for anomalies. Finally, anomalous behavior or network activity may also be present - such as trying to access system files, communicating with unknown domains/IP addresses, etc. Process Monitor, Wireshark, and Volatility are useful tools for monitoring and analyzing behavior and network activity.

3 How to deobfuscate malware?

Deobfuscating malware is a process of reversing or removing the obfuscation techniques applied by the malware author to restore the original or readable code or data. It can help to understand the functionality, purpose, and impact of the malware, as well as develop countermeasures. To deobfuscate malware, you can use methods such as unpacking, decoding, decrypting, and disassembling. Unpacking is extracting the original executable code from a packed file, while decoding is converting encoded data into its original form. Decrypting is recovering the original data from encrypted data, and disassembling is converting binary code into assembly code. Tools like UPX, PEiD, CyberChef, XORSearch, x64dbg, IDA Pro, Hex-Rays, and Snowman can be used to identify and use these methods. Manual techniques such as debugging, memory dumping, frequency analysis, brute force reverse engineering, and cryptanalysis can also be employed.

Often we improvise. To avoid mistakes when dealing with stressful situations I would also mention strong IR policies and procedures. Having run books and also testing response and recovery procedures. An overlooked area is constant training to security people, and we need to pay special attention to awareness for the workforce. I know cases where people felt the machine strange or slow, called IT, and a security incident was uncovered and mitigated in consequence.

Some things I have found helpful for working with malicious tools are: Ensure you understand anti-analysis techniques your analysis environment can mitigate these checks built into Crypters. When performing analysis I recommend a hybrid approach of dynamic and static analysis. Setting the proper breakpoints during dynamic analysis for data allocations helps target the functions you want to reverse as part of obfuscation research. Most of this discussion and tools target PE files, but remember malware comes in many forms. Understanding the file type you are working with and obfuscation methods for the target environment can help with any file you are reversing.
