How do you design a team building activity that aligns with your team goals?

If you want to see real, tangible improvements in team dynamics and performance, please do not use teambuilding activities. They may be fun, but they are largely ineffective in creating lasting change in a team. Instead, assess the team using a team-based measure like the Team Assessment Survey (TAS). This will help to identify where to focus your team improvement efforts and create a roadmap using the real work of the team to clarify goals, align team talent and roles, and drive significant, lasting improvements in team performance. If you just want a fun afternoon of activities, then build a paper tower or do a scavenger hunt. If you want to deliver real business outcomes, then use the TAS and craft your plan based on the results.

To achieve any organisational goals, we must ensure they are aligned with smaller team goals within the organisation, to enable buy-in. However, the real power comes from identifying individual and personal goals first and then spending time matching them against your team's goals to identify areas of potential collaboration. Chunking down goals is important for creating wider momentum.

We assume that we already know the personalities and roles of each team member, as well as their involvement with the company and the department's objectives. Set WIP limit to 1: Focus the attention of all the team on a single item ? Swarming: Encourage everyone to explore ways to collaborate in order to accelerate the completion of this unique work item ? Celebration: end the day by celebrating collaboration + completion of the work item ? Retrospective: Reflect together on what to ajust to quickly celebrate next win (refinement? success criteria? WIP Limit? etc.) This activity strengthens cohesion directly within the team's context, boost team spirit+productivity and demonstrate the value of agile practices.
