One approach that's gaining momentum in this quest for responsible design is the marriage of circular economy principles and the "product-as-a-service" model. During the ideation phase, we need to ask ourselves: What problem does our product solve? How can it benefit both users and the planet? What happens to the product at the end of its use-life? Is the product socially accessible to all? For instance, consider the Phillips example consumer electronics as a service: leasing lights instead of a consumer having to buy the lights.

2 Research your impact

The next step is to research your impact. How does your product affect the environment, society, and the economy? What are the positive and negative impacts of your product throughout its life cycle, from sourcing to disposal? What are the risks and opportunities for improvement? How do you measure and report your impact? Researching your impact will help you identify your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and set realistic and meaningful goals for improvement.
