Don't start with the value proposition right away, but start with developing a customer avatar. Based on the customer avatar think about hers/his Jobs-to-be-Done. You could also think about this as 1) customer discovery, 2) problem hypothesis, 3) solution hypotheses and 4) transformation hypothesis.
