One of the worst things I’ve witnessed is a leader being so proud of a reward they created, and it fell flat because they were out of touch with the team. An excellent place to start is by asking what motivates the team. Depending upon team size, this can be done 1 on 1, in town hall style, or via surveys. Once motivations are identified, you can align recognition to meet the team's goals.

A recognition program should be based on clear and SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely) criteria that reflect your team building objectives. For example, you can recognize team members who demonstrate collaboration, communication, innovation, or problem-solving skills. In my experience - using points, badges, certificates and similar rewards for team members - tend to go against the grain of team building. Instead, try using a team reward. Something that motivates the team to work together to achieve the common goal rather than compete against each other.

What I have witnessed is even if we have great rewards and recognition as a team, if the overall company culture is poor, team members won’t stay. It’s critical that we work with HR and our business unit leaders to have them recognize the value in our IT organization and build from the outside in.
