1 Understand your learners

Before you start planning your project, you need to know who your learners are, what they bring to the table, and what they want to learn. You can use surveys, interviews, observations, or other methods to gather information about your learners' backgrounds, strengths, challenges, passions, and aspirations. This will help you tailor your project to their needs, preferences, and learning styles. You can also involve your learners in the project design process by asking them for feedback, input, or ideas.

Bringing learners together in small groups using Instructional Conversation, will open doors for learners to share their own diverse experiences and other learners to share and compare. Guiding students with Instructional Conversation strategies in a small group format brings a comfortable sharing space and background into students’ lives that might not have a chance to be shared in other settings.

2 Define your learning goals

Once you have a clear picture of your learners, you need to define your learning goals for the project. What do you want your learners to know, understand, and be able to do as a result of the project? How do these goals align with the curriculum standards, competencies, or outcomes that you are expected to cover? You can use a framework such as the Essential Project Design Elements from the Buck Institute for Education (BIE) to guide your project design. This framework includes key components such as a challenging problem or question, sustained inquiry, authenticity, student voice and choice, reflection, critique and revision, and public product.

As an instructor, I design the goals with the following starting point: Is this a new audience learning a common task? An example is new hires learning the common process for calling out sick. Is this a known audience learning a new task? An example here is a new platform for report submission that all employees must learn. This helps me understand the audience and the goal. In the first case, it is more of a walk through and can include company culture. In the second case, I have to create as many parallels in order to prevent the new task seeming too daunting.

3 Choose a relevant topic and context

One of the most important aspects of project design is choosing a topic and context that are relevant and engaging for your learners and communities. You want your project to address a real-world issue, problem, or opportunity that matters to your learners and that connects to their lives, cultures, experiences, or interests. You also want your project to involve a real-world audience, partner, or client that can provide feedback, support, or resources for your learners. You can use sources such as current events, local issues, personal stories, or global challenges to generate ideas for your project topic and context.

4 Plan your project activities and assessments

After you have selected your project topic and context, you need to plan your project activities and assessments. How will you scaffold your learners' inquiry, research, collaboration, and creation throughout the project? What tools, materials, and resources will you provide or facilitate for your learners? How will you monitor and assess your learners' progress and performance during and at the end of the project? How will you incorporate formative and summative assessments, self-assessments, peer assessments, and external assessments? You can use a project calendar or timeline to organize your project activities and assessments and to communicate your expectations and criteria to your learners.

The ADDIE framework is tried and true, and can help storyboard the project. In the world of medical simulation, the E becomes crucial for both learner and instructor. The learner needs evaluation on their performance, when applicable. What the instructor needs is as much feedback as possible: content, delivery, and how they are as an instructor.

5 Implement and manage your project

Once you have planned your project activities and assessments, you are ready to implement and manage your project. This is where you need to be flexible, responsive, and supportive as a teacher and facilitator. You need to balance between providing structure and guidance and allowing autonomy and agency for your learners. You need to create a positive and safe learning environment that fosters inquiry, creativity, and collaboration. You need to address any challenges, issues, or conflicts that may arise during the project. And you need to celebrate your learners' achievements and learning outcomes.

6 Evaluate and improve your project

The final step in project design is to evaluate and improve your project. This is where you reflect on your project's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. You can use data, evidence, feedback, or testimonials from your learners, yourself, or other stakeholders to evaluate your project's impact and effectiveness. You can also use this information to identify areas for improvement and to make changes or adjustments for future iterations of your project. You can also share your project results, outcomes, or learnings with others who may benefit from or be interested in your project.
