How do you design for player retention and loyalty in the gaming industry?

Understanding your players is fundamental to designing for retention and loyalty in the gaming industry. In my experience, this insight guides me to craft experiences that resonate on a personal level, creating a game that feels like it was made just for them. By engaging with the community, collecting feedback, and analyzing player behavior, I can iterate on the game design to ensure it continually meets and exceeds their expectations. Well in my case focusing on engaging gameplay, social features, regular content updates, personalization, achievements, feedback, rewards, cross-platform accessibility, storytelling, and optimizing the onboarding experience, did wonders.

During the game idea conceptualization phase, know what you are making for and who are the potential users you are targeting. Ask the developers and yourself these two questions as a start: - What is the player motivation? - What does this motivation fulfil the player? Some mechanics are usually embedded in a specific genre, making design work slightly more manageable. The core task for designer in this phase is to think deeply on the questions: - What kind of game it is? - What the player will do? - How will it look? Designers must consider player's interaction with game objects and various actionable, the interaction with the game and player that forms gameplay, which enable specific experiences and feelings towards each player. Ensure the designer has the creativity to manipulate elements such as rules, objects and characters succinctly and precisely to influence the gameplay that player can interact iteratively. and dynamically.

Knowing the player's motivation is very vital in this, usually having both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is key to have a higher possibility of balancing the game. Consider having the intrinsic elements to trigger Flow state into your game, which is tough but highly desirable.
