I like to map out some information like "Who needs this product/services?" From there I go into some brainstorming, meeting with colleagues and writing down of ideas. Then mood boarding in illustrator, and then initial designs in illustrator. Meeting with colleagues and then changing things or pairing down based on reception. Its really really important to meet with people.

Please, please design in black and white first! Scale and print. Then introduce color, think about contrast and ways of reproduction: If printed, how much would it cost for a CMYK process? Limit to two or three colors if possible. And in terms of vectors, eliminate extra nodes. Get upclose and use the cmd+Y to do so.
