1 Data modeling basics

Data modeling is the process of creating a representation of the data requirements and structure of a system, using a formal notation or language. Data models can be classified into three levels: conceptual, logical, and physical. A conceptual data model describes the main entities and concepts of the system and their relationships, without regard to technical details or implementation. A logical data model specifies the attributes, keys, and constraints of the entities and relationships, as well as the normalization and normalization rules. A physical data model defines the actual storage and access methods of the data, such as tables, columns, indexes, and partitions.

Data modeling is the process of creating a business representation of the data and relationships. Data models can be classified into three levels: conceptual, logical, and physical. A conceptual data model describes a high level set of core business entities and their relationships, without regard to technical details. A logical data model further defines a conceptual model; creating attributes, keys, and constraints of the entities and relationships, as well as adhering to normalization rules. A physical data model converts the logical model to generate DDL. This model is the implementation, defining tables, columns, indexes, and partitions. The set of defined physical objects is largely dependent on the modeling tool and feature set.
