Updating and improving software is crucial in maintaining a system's stability. When live code sits unattended, isn't monitored, or tested, it slowly degrades until it becomes a liability. "Legacy" code can become the one thing that hinders a product from achieving its full potential. The best approach is to architect your system so that updates or maintenance work will not affect your users or the system's performance, giving you the freedom to continuously ensure your system is operating at its best.

Automating the process of building and deploying applications helps avoid mistakes which occur during manual deployment. Also cloud providers have services to configure parameters and secrets which eliminates maintaining them in config files and setting environment variables manually.
