1 Know your employer's goals and values

2 Align your goals and objectives

One of the main purposes of performance reviews is to set and review your goals and objectives for the current and future period. Make sure that your goals and objectives are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound), and that they align with your employer's goals and values. For example, if your employer values innovation, you can set a goal to learn a new skill, implement a new process, or propose a new idea that will improve your work or the organization. Show how your goals and objectives will benefit not only yourself, but also your team, department, and employer.

3 Provide evidence and examples

When you discuss your achievements and challenges in your performance review, provide evidence and examples that demonstrate your alignment with your employer's goals and values. Using the STAR (situation, task, action, result) method to structure my examples and show my efforts' impact helps me provide evidence and examples to illustrate my alignment with my employer's values and goals. My process involves is to provide this information in my monthly one on one with my manager. If monthly meetings are not possible, send your manager a monthly recap of your contributions to the organization's values and goals. Your alignment with your employer's values and goals shows that you are committed to the organization's success and contribute to a positive work culture. 1. Keep track of your contribution, 2. Understand your employer's values and goals, 3. Use specific examples, AND 4, Seek feedback. Good luck.

Another way to show your alignment with your employer's goals and values is to seek feedback and learning opportunities in your performance review. Ask your manager for constructive feedback on your strengths and areas for improvement, and how you can align them with your employer's expectations and standards. I also recommend being proactive by researching development opportunities both within and outside the organisation. Not all managers are aware of the development opportunities available. Educate yourself on the development possibilities and bring details of these (options, timings, pricing etc) to your performance review. If you bring nothing you risk leaving with nothing.

Finally, express your appreciation and enthusiasm for your employer's goals and values in your performance review. Thank your manager for their support, guidance, and feedback, and acknowledge the achievements and efforts of your team and colleagues.
