In my experience, it's also important to not only know the audience, but to manage the audience. Presenting more data than required to foster a discussion can tempt a data-centric audience into discussing unnecessary detail. The information can become the thing, when the customer should be the focus. Similarly, pitching too little data can mask inconveniences senior leaders should wrestle through with the team. Framing of data should help to manage agendas and calibrate discussions.

The second tip is to define your objectives and align them with your organization's strategy and vision. Your data analysis and reporting should have a clear purpose and a specific question or problem to solve. For example, you may want to evaluate the effectiveness of a new process, identify the root causes of a performance gap, or forecast the demand for a product or service. This is really important. As processes age, we have a human tendency to ask questions iteratively, which leads to the addition and aggregation of more data, which leads to data overload. Without a strong true north, deliberations become woolly jumbles over time. Make the vision and tenets notorious and drop data that isn't tethered to them.

Be careful with anecdotes. Experience has taught me that assertions are cheap but the data to support them is more expensive because it is more scarce. When you hear a conclusion, ask yourself if the evidence supports it. If you haven't heard the evidence, ask for it. Make decisions based on evidence and fact as often as you can, avoiding the tail-chasing that can paralyse organizations when they chase rumour and anecdote.

Too much data is paralysing, you need to filter out the noise, start with metrics easily identified as irrelevant and get narrower from there.

I find excel to be an excellent tool for snapshot analysis of metrics that do not normally fit together or are from several sources that dont play well together. Normalisation and weighting are key if using this method.

Be careful, however, to let the data tell the story rather than find the data to support a story. The human tendency is to think we know what's happening and find evidence to support our theory. But we achieve a higher percentage of non-fiction when we analyse the data and ask what story it is telling us.
