How do you deal with creative blocks, feedback, and revisions in your project management process?

To find your creative flow for any project I recommend the following: 1. Start with a solid plan - Before beginning any project, make sure you have a clear plan of action and timeline to follow. Consult with other stakeholders and partners to make sure you have the full context of what is needed. 2. Find your focus - Set aside distraction-free time for working on the project and stay focused on it until completion. 3. Allow yourself breaks - Breaks can help clear our minds. Take several throughout the day so you can come back with renewed energy and a fresh perspective.

Touch grass... really. It can be hard to constantly be creative when you are in the trenches and have to pump out ideas and content. Give yourself moments to walk outside, go to a park or a museum. Fill your creative cup. If you feel like you are experiencing a creative block, find ways to consume creative content as an observer. Think about what inspires you or impresses you. So much about creation stems from other sources, and you need to allow yourself the space to be inspired by nature, art, music, or other things.

A helpful method to getting the feedback you need as a creative is separating the subjective comments from the empirical ones. Citing an aspect of the project as “good” or “ugly” or “makes no sense” doesn’t help you navigate to a better solution or fix. Instead, have the person frame the comment around what that aspect needs to achieve. A “good” headline can be “clearly stating the product benefits.” “Ugly” images of people can be “too staged and need to feel more candid.” An infographic that “makes no sense” needs to be “organized so each step is illustrated clearly, following a progression.” Constructive feedback does not suggest a solution, just a way to get there. Once you’ve got that, you’ll figure out the rest.
