Think of these sets of dashboards like a map. To outsiders/aliens, it might make the most sense to show the countries. But as you explore with different purposes you’ll want to progressively reveal more nuanced information. For engineers you might want to zoom to sprint metrics, tech perf., and bug reports… ignoring sales KPIs and forecasts. Just like when you zoom in from a globe to a city there’s a plethora of new information that can be revealed (while also hiding everything else) Often people only tack what needs to be reported on right now or will track and report everything. Instead, think about tracking what you think could be helpful for now and the future and progressively reveal that information based on curiously level.

The best dashboards need to be easy to understand and not overwhelming. Trust me, most stakeholders do not look at dashboard for a living and it is easy to be overwhelmed - especially when data analysis is not their background. Make sure to meet regularly on a schedule to gain feedback from users. And keep it updated! Here are some key points for great dashboards: - Uniform color, easy to understand labels and titles - Updated & accurate - Fueled by constant feedback from the users - Easy to explain and train on - Scheduled meeting cadence to gain feedback from users - Treat like a living organism, always evolving

If you are using a digital dashboard for your own business, or setting one up for a client, you should consider a quality rather than quantity approach in terms of data. Think about what is most important information you need to have available to hand at all times. While having every single quantifiable data-point available for a business in one place is useful, often there are 3-5 key metrics that a client wants to see, and this should be the focus of the dashboard. My marketing agency uses a digital dashboard that we tune to each client for the metrics most important to them. From ROAS to social media growth to profits. We wouldn't have it any other way and I believe that it's good for the service provider and the clients alike.

The purpose of a dashboard should flow from the purpose of the company - so if the company doesn't have a clearly defined purpose you should start there! Once that exists, the purpose of the dashboard can be used for a number of things - I prefer structuring it using a principle from 'the four disciplines of execution': create a compelling scoreboard. Everyone should feel empowered to both understand and execute on the scoreboard. They should understand what each part of it is, how it works, and how objectives are tracked. Overall, the scoreboard should be the 'single source of truth' that employees can use to track if both they, and the company, are living their purpose.
