Set design is a crucial element of theatrical production, as it creates the visual and spatial context for the story, characters, and action. But how do you go from a script or a concept to a tangible and realistic set? The first step of set design is to read and analyze the script, paying attention to the following aspects: the genre, tone, and style of the play; the time period, location, and culture of the setting; the number and type of scenes and locations; the transitions and movements between scenes; the mood and atmosphere of each scene; the character traits and motivations; and the symbolism and themes of the play. All these factors will influence your choices of colors, shapes, textures, props, and furniture for the set.
When hired in 1982, at a community College, I was an experiment. My education and experience covered Performance and Technical Theatre. My design ability was limited, but I had already built dozens of shows in my own college experience. So, you read the play, think about talent available, budget and how the script fits your space. Because I was doing it all, I relied on many set drawings in the script. My strength was allowing the published play to guide what has already worked and allow the words to shape the environment. Students were very engaged because stage directions, in the script, applied to their blocking and character immersion. As they absorbed character, the space was familiar and a allowed them to enter in.
I read the script, talk to the director and I have this innate gift of seeing it in my head and my first visions usually find themselves working out as I put it to paper. I've been in the show biz since childhood and I consider myself a showman. Though sometimes I have to scale it back due to budgetary concerns but my thing is scaling sown big project to simple elegance.
I start by reading and annotating the script, focusing on aspects such as characters and how the audience should feel and react to different scenes. As I annotate, I sketch ideas for visuals, such as ideas for blocking, forms that can convey thematic ideas, and environment. Then, when I'm done with the script, I develop my sketches and turn them into a to-scale model of the set, which is a basis for the actual construction.
The next step is to research and sketch your ideas for the set, based on your script analysis. You can use various sources of inspiration, such as books, magazines, photographs, paintings, films, or real-life locations. You can also consult with the director, the playwright, the actors, and other designers to get their input and feedback. Sketching your ideas will help you explore different possibilities, refine your vision, and communicate your concepts to others. You can use pencil, pen, or digital tools to create rough sketches or more detailed drawings of the set.
The third step is to model and render your set design, using either physical or digital tools. A model is a scaled-down representation of the set, usually made of cardboard, foam, or wood. A render is a realistic image of the set, usually created with computer software. Both methods allow you to see how the set will look from different angles, how it will fit in the space, how it will interact with the lighting and sound, and how it will affect the audience's perception. You can use models and renders to test and modify your design, as well as to present it to the production team and the stakeholders.
The final step is to build and dress the set, using the materials, techniques, and equipment that suit your design and budget. You will need to work with carpenters, painters, electricians, and other technicians to construct the set elements, such as walls, platforms, doors, windows, stairs, etc. You will also need to work with prop masters, costume designers, and other artists to dress the set with the appropriate items, such as furniture, fabrics, rugs, lamps, books, etc. You will need to supervise and coordinate the installation and removal of the set, as well as the maintenance and repairs during the run of the show.
