1 Define your competencies

Creating a CBL module requires defining the competencies that learners should achieve. Competencies are specific, relevant statements that explain what learners can do, know, and value after completing the module. For instance, when teaching a module on writing a persuasive essay, some of the competencies may include recognizing the purpose, audience, and tone of a persuasive essay; developing a clear and coherent thesis statement; supporting the thesis with relevant and credible evidence; using appropriate transitions, organization, and language; and applying the conventions of grammar, punctuation, and citation.

While creating a CBL, the focus should be on the outcome or the relevance of the competency to the industry demand. I follow the steps below to define competency-based learning: 1. Identify in-demand job roles. 2. List the competencies required for those job roles. 3. Decide on the competencies. 4. Identify the performance criteria to be included in each competency 5. Identify the theoretical concepts required to perform the tasks. This practice always helps us align with industry demand to create a skillful workforce.

The successful competency based learning modules refers to a well-designed and carefully developed learning materials (hard or soft copy) that provide detailed instruction to guide and help a learner acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude of a specific unit of competency on a self-paced learning modality. The concept of competency-based learning focuses on three key characteristics which amongst other are: - Learner-centric, (develop skills & acquire knowledge at their pace) - Differentiation, (learners' communications, interventions, and support) - learning outcomes. (clearly defining the learning outcomes)
