1 Choose your plugins and effects

There are many audio plugins that serve as a particular sound that people recognize. The Universal Audio 1176 and the LA-2A are staples of the legendary sound of recordings we all know and love. Using emulations of these will produce solid results as will many other staples of the studio now available in plugin emulations. These are often goto plugins for daily work. As all plugins do, there are presets to get started. However, understanding the basics of how these simple compressors work can help to know what works on different types of sound. 2 Save your preset or chain

The next step is to save your preset or chain, so you can access it later. Most plugins and effects have a save or export function that allows you to name and store your settings as a file or a folder. You can also use a preset manager or a browser to organize and categorize your presets and chains by type, genre, mood, or any other criteria. Make sure you save your presets and chains in a location that is easy to find and backup.

If you are working in Pro Tools you can save all of your effects for a track together as a Track Preset. Do this by right clicking on the Track Name and selecting "Save Track Preset..." In the resulting Dialog you can select the category you wish to save it under, name your preset and assign some tags to make it easier to find in the future. Also, click the "Track Data to Recall..." button and deselect the elements of the preset you don't wish to save. Often times I don't want to save the volume, pan or track output assignments as I really just want the preset to give me my plugins.

The third step is to load your preset or chain, so you can apply it to your track or project. Depending on your DAW, you can either drag and drop your preset or chain file or folder onto a track, a bus, or a master channel, or use a plugin rack or a mixer to load it. You can also use a preset manager or a browser to browse and select your presets and chains. Make sure you load your presets and chains in the same format and sample rate as your project.

If you are working in Pro Tools load a track preset by right clicking on the Track Name, scrolling over "Recall Track Preset...", scrolling to the category containing the preset you'd like and then clicking the preset's name.

The final step is to modify your preset or chain, so you can fine-tune it to your specific needs.
