I have also seen founders just build click through prototypes with no back end to show what the product could look like. You need to validate if you are building anything that solves for customer problems BEFORE you spend a ton of cash.

Observation: My experience regarding this topic and most startup self-help info has been that it is a rare occurrence when it is written from the perspective of an MVF startup - minimal viable funding - as in the lone wolf inventor / developer bootstrap venture. Screwups - simple mistakes, usually get it right, the best response - move on. Weakness - you do them over and over, you know the roots of the problem but not able to fix it.
