How do you compare train the trainer certification costs and benefits?

While I believe that in-person training is always the best, the current world of work makes it difficult and often impossible for many people to attend. Online programs are the best option for individuals and companies both from a cost perspective as well as from a work-life balance perspective. Yes, online programs do require more self-discipline and less interaction, however this is the mode most people are going to be looking for.

A key consideration when evaluating the format of a TTT program is how it aligns with learning preferences and professional commitments. While online programs offer flexibility, it's important to remember that the lack of direct interaction can be a significant drawback for those who thrive in a collaborative, face-to-face learning environment. On the other hand, in-person programs, though potentially more costly due to travel and accommodation, offer immersive experiences and instant feedback, which can be invaluable for skill development. Blended formats, though they require a balanced commitment, can provide a comprehensive learning experience by merging the convenience of online learning with the hands-on approach of in-person sessions.

I think it is really important to think about your energy and how you need to manage your energy when considering program duration. Consider your environment, your ability to dedicate your attention, and how much energy you need to have for the rest of your day when evaluating these programs.

It still surprises me to hear and observe that a lot of people are using the concept of training of trainers in a wrong way. For many people a ToT is a training in the substance of their expertise. It is unfortunate to also see that even organizations are using the term in this misleading interpretation. A ToT is about the methodology of imparting knowledge and most importantly skills to a group of individuals who will perform trainer tasks on topics of their choice. A ToT can be coupled with a variety of thematic expertise however the term ToT is a standalone term and it should be used in this meaning. From this perspective the content of a ToT should focus on how one can teach others. Methods to make participants retain knowledge& skills.

Be honest with yourself about where you are and what you need to achieve your current goals. Don't spend your hard earned money on a course that is beyond what you need. If you need to master foundational skills, choose that course and work your way up to the more advanced courses after you have gathered more experience and had a chance to reflect on where you want to go.

Diversity in program content is crucial for meeting various training needs. Broad, general programs offer a solid foundation in training essentials, ideal for beginners or those seeking a comprehensive overview. Specialized programs cater to niche needs, aligning with specific industries or training focuses – a valuable consideration for professionals looking to enhance their expertise in a particular area. For those already familiar with the basics, intermediate and advanced programs that tackle complex training challenges can be a significant career booster. Selecting a program that aligns with your career trajectory and areas of interest is essential for maximizing the benefits of the certification.

I’m going to disagree here. Trainers, particularly in-house trainers, require no accreditation at all. Sadly, many accredited courses have inflated prices due to some fancy accreditation with an awarding body that wouldn’t know one end of a training session from another. Most importantly, find a training organisation that has a long history of delivering Train the Trainer courses. One whose trainers have actually worked as in-house trainers and understand the challenges faced. Furthermore, find a training company that will tailor the course to your organisation’s specific needs. All of the above is infinitely more important than a fancy piece of paper.

I think that accreditation is important for professionals. Credibility in the professional realm is an important factor. If you are trying to land a new job or move to a new area of practice, choose an accreditation that is recognized and valued by where you want to go. Look for accreditation that is recognized by the communities of practice that you wish to participate in or work in.

Accreditation serves as a hallmark of quality and credibility. Programs accredited by renowned bodies like IACET or ATD adhere to stringent standards, assuring you of a high-quality learning experience and wider recognition of your certification. While non-accredited or self-accredited programs may offer flexibility or unique perspectives, they might not carry the same weight in professional circles. It's crucial to consider how the accreditation of a program aligns with your career aspirations and the standards expected in your professional community.

Train the trainer training courses are well received by hosting country participants and allows the programme you work for to expand the knowledge on national level in the native languages used. The global programme in which I trained for 10 years is currently active in 55 countries. We delivered training and provided accreditation for the talents we trained. We used the accredited trainers in their own regions and provided mentor support during training supported by them. After covid, we decided to deliver trainings on side only, hands on in the area trainees work and using equipment used in the country. Concerning additional costs for accreditation, i disagree on that at least in the area I work.

In my experience the feedback from participants have been extremely positive. Further to this several participants have contacted me after the training to express how useful they have found the skill and in addition they have strongly recommended their colleagues and team members to attend future courses.
