How do you communicate with other professionals in foundation design?

During excavation and foundation level, intensively work with MEP teams and encourage them to do their works parallel to your work if it's possible. There is no point of digging holes and refill if you can install sleeves and ducts earlier.

Based on my experience, here are a few key highlights: 1. Clarity & Brevity: Use clear, concise language, avoiding jargon unless certain the recipient understands. 2. Visual Aids: Utilize diagrams, blueprints, and CAD models to visually represent design specifics. 3. Listen Actively: Understand concerns and feedback, ensuring collaborative solutions. 4. Stay Updated: Discuss recent research, techniques, and materials to ensure best practices. 5. Formal Channels: Use emails, reports, and meetings for documentation and clarity. 6. Ask Questions: Ensure understanding and gather necessary information. 7. Feedback Loop: Regularly review and adjust based on peer feedback.

As a report reviewer, I try to put myself in the readers' seats - and not just the structural or architect. Ideally, the CM and foundation contractor will also read the report, as will the 3rd party testing agency (ideally, your team, but often, not). If I read a paragraph where I am confused, imagine how the end user will feel? Back to the writer for clarification, and in almost all cases where this occurs- I add a diagram. Also- NO EXECUTIVE SUMMARIES!! I NEVER issue a report with an executive summary- because that is the only thing many people will read. I have a structural client whose standard RFP requires it- my response to them is, "then you should be able to successfully build your project from cartoon drawings & a materials list".

I often find the using analogies goes along way to enabling comprehension to non-technical audiences. Analogies are a powerful tool, not only can they explain the complex into simple to understand concepts they also have the power to convey tactile and sensory data. Audiences can get an appreciation of; weight, feel, look, smell, density, rigidity, and relationships of a system. This is particularly helpful when dealing with domestic clients, it not only makes you more relatable, it provides them with confidence in you and your proposals.

I think the previous posts covered it really well. The only thing I would add is to never assume you're all using the same global or local axis. If I need to transmit reactions to another professional, I usually specify whether a vertical force is tension or compression. For some software positive in the vertical might mean global up, while for others it means global down. Also some foundation design codes may not be LRFD, always ask how they need their loads reported.

When producing written work for other industry professionals you should proceed on the basis that they are a knowledgeable. This means you should write using the appropriate technical, engineering and scientific terminologies. Also, tell the story of why you have taken the approach you have, in a logical order. This will help the other reader follow your design/decision process and to understand the design solutions. It also allows them to effectively critique and comment on your work. This can ease situations where you are required to send you documents to a third party checking engineer, Building Control or other assurance control party.

I have found attending site with the design team, client and contractor beneficial at the project-kick off. Particularly if you have been able to review a GI Report or have been able to check historical Borehole logs in the area. This will allow you to discuss potential foundation solutions that are tailored to the likely founding strata of the site. The contractor can then provide comment on how they would approach the construction, temporary works and impact on programmes of the foundation solutions. Once the visit is concluded all parties will leave with a better understanding of the design and the implementation of the project, with everyone in the same page there is less issue of abortive works or down time.
